05 Nov 2010 'Guy Fawkes Night'

I know you're not, you're talking about some random night no-one else cares about or has heard of :)

You mean the celebration of the Battle of the Boyne that saw William of Orange defeat King James and keep Louis of France from expanding into Europe? Then after William took control of England gave the people and parliament more rights than they'd ever had before?

It's funny. People on the UK mainland will claim the 12th of July is bigoted and sectarian and why do we celebrate it. Well, that's why. Without William, who knows how modern Britain would have turned out. Then they go and burn effigies of a Catholic who failed to kill a Protestant monarch. *coolface*.

Sorry, is that the 11th or 12th? You seem to be at odds with a previous poster.

I've never heard of celebrations on that day, nor have any of the people around me.

It might be a big thing for one of our colonies, but not for the motherland :)

The 11th night is when they light the bonfires which were to help Williams arrival. The 12th celebrates the victory over James.

It wasn't until William Of Orange came along and got rid of James that the foundations of the modern political system we take for granted today could be laid with the Bill Of Rights, that gave the citizenship and parliament far more rights and control (and less interference from the Monarchy) over their country than any other Monarch before.

Just celebrating the guy who stopped the threat of the monarchy switching religions. :p It isn't just an Irish thing. Pretty big bit of history for the whole of Britain.

It's odd that we don't celebrate Guy Fawkes back home. Some guy trying to blow up Parliament? What's not to celebrate? :p

EDIT: But this has gone too far off topic. Sorry OP for spoiling your thread. I just find fireworks night at this time of year odd, as it's always been 11th July for me.

The funniest thing about the whole 12th of July celebration is a lot of Protestants don't even realise that William Of Orange was supported by The Holy Roman Empire and a number of other Catholic nations under the league of Augsburg. The whole point of "The Grand Alliance" was to stop French expansion into Europe and that's why William came to England and then Ireland as James the II was Louis XIV cousin.

Im looking forward to seeing the fireworks :) My dad never let us go when we were younger but where I live there are lots of shows that I can see, or I may go and watch them at a show :D

All he was trying to do was get rid of a Protestant monarch and install a Catholic one. The flipping back and forth between Monarchs is some of the nastiest times in British history for civilians, if you didn't bow to the will of the installed Monarch (namely converting to their chosen religion) you were either imprisoned, or butchered. It wasn't until William Of Orange came along and got rid of James that the foundations of the modern political system we take for granted today could be laid with the Bill Of Rights, that gave the citizenship and parliament far more rights and control (and less interference from the Monarchy) over their country than any other Monarch before.

His daughter.

Anyway parliament is in contempt of itself and corrupt, as is our monarch.

All the palaces should burn.

But nope, 'we're all in this together'.

I know. That Battle led to a lot more countries in Europe signing up which helped stopped the French threat to the continent.

Although I can't blame anyone from the "motherland" for not knowing what it's all about. You'd be hard pressed to find someone out on the 12th celebrations in N.I. who knows what it's about.

I love picking out this years best stuff then setting it off. I don't see why people should complain, its not like its every night.

Last few towns I've lived in it has been every night for the couple weeks before and after the 5th. So far this year, despite fireworks being on sale I've not heard any being set off. :)

My area turns into a warzone around this time of year. Glass bottles + fireworks being the weapon of choice. I go to the display in the park which is good though.

Personally I think fireworks should be banned except for during organised events.
I completely agree, however they aren't banned so I have my big selection of Cat 2 and Cat 3 barrages and big rockets ready for next weekend. Also invested in Remote Kontrol firing to make things easier for me :). News Years Eve will also be a big display from me too :D.

Sounds like you're preparing to attack a Taliban strongold. :D
