people with unsecured internet networks?

Using an unsecured network is fine, but breaking in to networks (regardless of the **** poor WEP encryption) is outright wrong :p

I would only do it in an utter emergency (hey, internet being down counts as that doesn't it? ;) ).

Your computer has to send its MAC address out. How else would the router know it is on the "approved" list? ;)

Sniff that and then spoof it (with software) and jobs a good one...

Pretty much, sniffing and spoofing a MAC address is child's play these days, can be done in a matter of minutes, as you say WPA2 with a long alphanumeric string is the way to go.

The big problem is even though most people have a secured wireless network, its not hard at all for some people to decrypt and steal the bandwidth anyway.

I have roughly 5 unsecured wireless networks available as i speak, some people just dont understand the importance of having a secured network?

WPA2 TKIP+AES is what our access points use :).

I've got no issues "stealing" someones open connection. But although I've got the tools (KisMAC) I wouldn't try and crack the password to a secure network or packet-sniff the open network. That's wrong.

Not too sure of that myself, with a suitable key a WPA2-AES encrypted connection isn't exactly going to be easy to crack.

Mine is unsecured, thing is I live in a no through road, nearest neighbour half a mile away, and a quarter mile long lane so there is little point.
