Right then now that a girl has entered my life I want to sort this out.
When I was 13 two years ago now , I was rushed into hospital with Ketoacidosis as a result of type 1 diabetes, Among the other effects was weight loss. I was fairly chubby at the time and lost a huge amount of weight 2-3.5 Stone. I still have what are called "stretch marks" all over the top of my legs. I just seem to have all this excess flab left over and not to sure how to get rid of it. I have taken up cycling and am now doing that for 2 hours, 3 times a week and have taken upon myself to cut right back on all sugar products, Well as much as possible with me being a diabetic.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

A girl! Oh my chives. Does she like BMWs? :p

I don't quite understand though, do you want to lose weight or lose the stretch marks?

Cant get rid of the strech marks sadly. Just looking to get rid of all this excess flab. :)

Well, I'll tell you what worked for me at around your age. It's not what I was suggested on here, which involved doing weights and stuff, which in all honesty, was probably the better option and would've stopped me being a massive weed now :P

I did 10mins rowing machine, 20 mins cycling, 20mins running, then 40x25m swimming every day for about 2 months. I lost 2 stone and I was in the best fitness and mental state of my life. I've lost about another stone since then and grown upward a fair bit, but that's been down to a combination of illness, sugar level problems (probably going to get diebetes, sorta resigned myself to it), and just somehow losing weight without trying.

Looking back on it I'd definitely have chucked in some weights as I went as it probably would've created more noticable progress and plus, as stated, I wouldn't be a beanpole with no muscles as I am now :)

Do you think that the, the cycling I do now (2 hours 3 times a week) would be enough to lose weight? (Not bothered about muscle for now)

You sound very similer to me at that age, I was 13st 3 and 5'8. Now 6ft and 10st 7. Slightly skinnier than I'd like to be but I actually can't put on weight at the mo... don't understand it.

Don't shun the weights, some good basic exercises will serve you well alongside your cycling.

dont just ignore the sugars, watch out for the fatty foods etc.
nothing wrong with cycling though, sounds like you just need to give it a bit of time now and possibly increase how many times a week you do it, or introduce other stuff liek walking on teh days you dont cycle

This is a good bit more complex than most people wanting to loss weight thou not impossible. Are you on MDI? Which insulins do you use? How is your control?

For me at least if I want to loss weight I need to lower how much insulin I use, to do this safely and correctly I need to eat lower amounts of carbs. I believe insulin makes the body store fat and not to use it as energy when you take large amounts. It has taking be a long time to realise but it was lack of muscle that made me 'look fat' I never really had good control as a teen and so my body eat away at my muscle for fuel.

I'd also like to ask if you are mostly taking about 'flab' on your belly? It could be that you are over using the site and damaging the fat creating fatty lumps there, I know I did as a teen and still have some damage. It really is worth making sure that you not only change the site, but the area within a site to stop / reverse this.

This diabetes site has an area about weight loss and another about fitness http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/forum/Blah.pl

They are nice people but mostly on the older side. A lot of really smart people on there that have and understand diabetes.

Glad to here you are doing exercise but you'll also need to look at diet. Not to sound negative but the standard 'healthy heart' diet (what the NHS wants diabetics on) isn't good for either diabetes or weight loss and is based on bad research.

On a side note be very careful that anything you do for weight loss comes 2nd in your mind to BG control.

Well it is fairly easy for me having dealt with the issues for the last 15 years or so myself and having read about it, to give advice I've found and tried. I have a pretty good diabetic team but even they still hold onto some NICE guidelines that aren't very good / work.

Do you do carb counting and insulin ratios? Or are you on fixed amounts? If you are on fixed amounts of carbs it really can be pretty hard to loss weight. I'm only guessing but since you are pretty newly diagnosed that you'll be on MDI or a pump maybe?

Don't know what MDI is sorry, should I? Good control generally. Use Novorapid and lantus insulin injections.
And yeh, I am talking about flab on my belly (Btw this only used 1 once a day on weekdays for injections, dont think that is overusing it?), that is the only place along with my upper chest (hardly bad though) that looks flabby.

Carb counting and insulin ratios yes. Not on fixed amounts of carbs no :)

You are on MDI (just means multiple daily injections). Do you inject into your belly a lot? (I know this is temping since it is handy and the insulin works quickest there for most people) Are your sites checked for diabetic lipohypertrophy (fatty lumps?) It might not be anything to do with that but it is worth checking out. I never really used different areas within a site and ended up with them.

If you know how to carb count, then I'd try eating a few less carbs and more protein and fats and adjusting your insulin to suit (only if you know how to do this, don't go messing about if you don't) That works for me, but everyone is different.

Edit: sorry sounds more like I'm quizing you than offering advice, but it is pretty complex and there could be lots of factors.

Well the nurse always checks my sites every time I go to the diabetes center, not sure if she checks for that though.
As for the insulin, well generally you just don't count for protein and fat products unless they carbohydrates in as well?
