Are they allowed to charge whatever they want? For example, a journey that would cost £6.50 in the day for some reason costs £10.00 on a Friday night/weekend night.

Is this actually allowed?

They use different 'stages' of pricing depending on time of day and day of week.

There will normally be a single digit number on the meter to the left of the cost to indicate the stage with stage one being the norm but going up to stage 4 (iirc) on Fri/Sat nights.

EDIT : This is in Fife, Scotland anyway... Not sure if it applies everywhere.

Yup common practice they can also pretty much charge what they want once the hire goes outwith the local authority area

Be aware some do some dnt for example we charge a flat fee of 50pence pre journey between midnight and 5am

it's always been like this, cabs cost more after 11pm down here on the south coast and bank holidays and i think on a sunday too,

Ask the phone operator to price check you the journey, that way them stupid meters (or driver) wont take the pee.

am a hackney Driver on the wirral, as for those Stupid meters there programed by the Town Hall they can not be changed.

Yep 4 miles outside are area

Always like this

Actually here between Midnight and 6AM the taxi meter has a 50% "midnight charge"

would not say 50% but ours atfer 10pm goes from £2.60 min to £3.30,
an 20p per 218 yards to 20p per 187 yards atfer 10 pm

Rate 1 6am to 10pm £2.60 min
Rate 2 10pm to 6am £3.30 min
Rate 3 Bank Holidays £3.90 min
Rate 4 Xmas day and new years day an eve £5.90 min

From what I remember, it's 125% for night (after 23:00 or 00:00, depending on your area) and weekends, possibly 150% on weekend nights, 125% for 5-6 people in a taxi, 150% for 7-8 and up to 200% for public holidays. This was in Southampton about 3 years ago.
