What unpopular opinions do you hold?

The working class really have no idea how lucky they are. They have a very high standard of living for unskilled work.

Corporal punishment is desperately required in UK high schools.

Unions do more harm than good.

The UK is a pathetic joke compared to what it was 100 years ago. We owned so much of the world, now we own nothing and owe £££.

Immigrants are nowhere near as bad as the what we already have here. We have some scum who are British that need shooting.

Stop spending money on prisons, just jam them in and let them suffer.

Smoking is a tax on stupidity.

The death penalty is required.

Road tax has no purpose. If I have a 6 litre v8 then I already pay more tax through the fuel I use.

The 40% bracket of tax payers are getting ****ed the hardest the next tax year, not the poor.

Gays need to stop being in your face. If you want to do it, do it, there is no need to tell me about it.

Anyone who is unemployed and on benefits should be given a severe beating if they are caught in a pub/club or buying cigarettes or alcohol.

If everyone used resources like the US do, then the world would be completely buggered.

A filthy, vile, offensive anti-PC joke once in a while harms doesn't do anyone any harm.

Scary how many fascists there are....

That is actually quite a good idea:

Government funding only for the areas we need more people in like indeed, science/technology/engineering/communications&it/biology/logistics/etc, anything else: Pay for yourself. I don't see the point in the government subsidizing studies like philosophy or culture or tourism&recreation, etc, well, pretty much anything there is little demand for people for.

What so you want to live in a technocratic society? Be careful what you wish for! Life isn't the sum of our technological progress. ps if if you read some history you will find that nearly all science was based on some philosophical idea in the past. Ergo sum todays philosophy will be tomorrows science.

Glorifying ignorance and stupidity on BBC radio and TV should result in that person being fired - radio 1 is full of people who 'can't do maths' (i.e. they can't be bothered). There are 'features' which encourage children to write random words in their homework - how is that beneficial to anyone in any way at all? I find it particularly annoying that my license fee is paying for people to tell the nation it's OK not to care about work, and giving the impression mathematics is some massively difficult subject nobody should be expected to understand even the basics of - sure, they don't say this explicitly, but to my ears, it's implied.

I agree 100%, newsbeat for tards with its unnecessary explanations is a further example. 'David Cameron, the Prime Minister (he's the man who runs the country), today said,....'

Further views, people get far more than they think in general.

NHS money is wasted on those who do nothing to help themselves.

Smoking tax rate should be doubled, and smoking itself should be made illegal with the age limit starting at the current 18, and rising by 1 year each year, meaning the tax revenue is slowly reduced towards zero, but in a manner the country can cope with, and we at the same time breed a whole new generation of people who do not smoke. Wouldn't affect anyone who does smoke, and I'd love to see someone try to campaign for the right to addict someone to drugs and toxins in a poisonous stick.

I think we should have never stopped research into biological weapons, and should be using them nefariously on nations whos opinions differ from our own. Dengue here, cholera there, ebola for rapid intervention. All while admitting nothing.

I think there are many more problems within the country that need to be eliminate before people start complaining about the amount of immigrants, who bar the Romanians are generally here to work and do well for themselves.

That the rebellion winning does no one any good in the end. We can't control a planet of different races and religions let alone a whole galaxy. The only way to rule that many people is with an iron fist and threat of force choking.

A super star destroyer and planet destroying death star helps.

The empire should have won, they were awesome and the only way to control that many people.

There's no way the rebellion could have built a new death star in 4 years. They would be on strike or complaining about tea breaks. A few force chokings of the union reps and in 4 years they had a fully operational death star.

The Empire is the only way.

Yoda was quitter.

-People should need a license to have kids (i.e. have a big enough home, and the means to properly support having children).

-Dimishing returns on benefits. Kid 1 = 100% of benefit, Kid 2 = 70% extra, Kid 3 = 30% extra something like that. Would stop people having kids just to claim benefits if it started to cost the parents more.

-We will eventually have major problems sustaining the levels of poulations we are growing into, maybe not now, but at some point in the future.

-People who don't want to work should be found something to do for a job, even if it's menial labour.

I don't believe mankind deserves to exist, in our current state, and the sooner we wipe each other out the better*.

* That or we all start living Star Trek, but I think we all know which is more likely...
This. Want to start a cult together?

That and people form opinions based on very little too easily.

Good idea for a thread btw.

If the question is what unpopular opinions do you hold? Then is it what unpopular opinions in general or just unpopular in the contexts of this thread as the answers might be very different - I hold a number of opinions that I didn't think were particularly unpopular or contentious but definitely go against the grain of what is expressed by some here. It does make me somewhat glad that a number of people here are not anywhere near positions of real power but then I'm sure the feeling is mutual. :)

One which I suspect is unpopular but I hold it anyway is that MPs should potentially be paid more but with less in the way of claimable allowances - we're asking these people to run the country, the least we can do is compensate them adequately for it. When you realise that the PM earns less than the boss of many averagely successful companies then you get a sense of perspective, if we want the best then we should be prepared to pay for it - we may be lucky and we get the most suited purely because they want to dedicate the better part of their lifetime to public service but equally we may suffer through incompetents who are attracted to the power and will put up with the flak because their finances are already secure. I'm more than happy to listen to proposals for reform of the HoC and possibly reducing the number of MPs but it would have to have a clearly definable gain rather than just changing it for the sake of it.

In fact I'm tempted to put broadly the same argument for teachers, we say we want the best for our kids and yet teaching has never seemed a particularly attractive option when considered on a cost/benefit analysis. I do think that the education system needs a large amount of reform though, especially to get rid of poor teachers and a lot of the administrative burden that appears to have arisen.

I do not believe that dyslexia, OCD, ME, Synaesthesia or IBS effect the vast majority of people who claim to be afflicted by them.
Hysteria is rife.

I believe people who think they are channelling spirits, seeing ghosts, or talking to the dead should tested for mental illness, (if this is for money then they should be arrested for theft)

I believe that criminals in Her Majesties Service should repay their crimes by becoming slave labour.

Immigration has gone out of control and should have been better regulated years ago.

Religion sucks ass too! great excuse for "Holy Wars" though I guess.

Snowdog, you fell into that one. I honestly didn't think you'd bite :p
So, you'd nuke all capitalists if you could :p ? Why don't you move to a non capitalist country if you hate capitalism ? I hear they hate capitalism in cuba or north korea?
I think you're confusing me with some kind of fundamentalist.

More accurately I am pro post-capitalism in a socio-environmental led sustainable way. We get all the benefits of capitalism with no environmental degradation and no change of lifestyle. So you get everything you want, like your car which appears to be important thing to you (don't forget I own a hotrod and another classic car), except it won't have a negative effect. You won't have a lifestyle change because products will be designed such that they don't pollute and run on clean power, they can be disassembled at end of life and materials can be recovered, materials are recyclable, jobs are created in the new industries that develop for the infrastructure, wealth generated is invested in a sustainable way because industry is now cleaner, so CO2 is decoupled from economic activity (don't care if you don't believe the CO2 story or not), equity starts to filter through, people are more happy round the world because they aren't being exploited, so less unrest, less terrorism...

You'll just be joe public. Your society is already designed for you, it's just full of problems that need to be looked at from a different angle. It'll just be redesigned in a way that your lifestyle won't pollute or exploit. You have no control over that at the moment. Whenever you switch an appliance on or start your car or eat, do anything, save your money, you're doing some damage somewhere, but you have no control over that. Idealistically, one day, you'll be able to do all those things and it won't do any harm, you'll be able to do anything as much as you like with no guilt attached.

This kind of world is a long way off, typically because it's opposed so much, but I'm quite happy researching the beginnings of it.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to see a place like that. Why do you prefer a world that is economically unstable, reliant on resources that are running out, polluted, full of inequality, exploitation and unrest, where restrictions have to be put on you to keep your consumption under control?
