New Toy !!! Part Duex !

Just found a neat trick, you can set it up so it (yes, the Drobo itself) sends you emails about its status, from ALL of it, to important to critical. So you can see how it is doing (if any drives failed) while you are away from it and ask someone at home or office just to replace the drive with the red lights !

It can't be easier !

How does it sign it's email, I can just imagine;

Dear Raymond,

The hard drive is bay 2 has failed, I'm flashing my little red light but no one has noticed. Don't worry though, I've rearranged your data and all your porn is safe.

Hope you're enjoyed Cornwall.

Love Drobo xxx

P.s. The cat is missing you.

I have a 2nd generation Drobo and love it. Last month a drive failed and the recovery was exactly as it says on the tin (although took a fair while). The ability to add any size disk at any time is invaluable for increasing storage with zero, and i mean zero, fuss.

You could build a PC to do the same, but why would you? Far to much extra work and maintenance not to mention the additional benefits the drobo offers. I have had the same argument with a number of people some of which have gone on to try the Drobo and not gone back.

I dunno about that...
I built a WHS system out of spare parts that I had and have steadily upgraded the drives over time to 8TB
It has been good as gold, even the missus loves it, and you can't say better than that..
OK, its not hot swappable drives, but that is just because it is in a cheap £18 mid tower case, but I am planning on changing that when Vail comes out :p

I'll have to look at WHS again, I tried it way back at the start but couldn't see any benefit over a server 2008 setup. For my uses anyway.

No, that is a fair point - if server 2008 does what you need, then there is no point tbh..
But, as the whole family use the storage, it is a nice easy way to set everything up in a way that even my 11yr old can handle and understand..
Thats the main reason why I like it, simple, and does what it says, and integrates nicely into media centre..

I'm very tempted by the Drobbo, I've added it to my basket more than once then bottled it. You see I used to own a Netgear Toaster and having had everything backed up to that with both drives in RAID1 I thought I was safe.. how wrong. "Unable to attach drive", "No drives detected" etc. Having lost a LOT of mission critical data I have always used a software imaging solution to a RAIDed array with lots of redundancy. I've tried Server2k3 and I have a licensed copy of WHS ver1, but that was a nightmare too. Connector software that didn't work, drives that could not be seen, data lost etc.

What I am waiting for is Drobbo mk3 or whatever they are going to call it. It will have the following:

* At least Ten SATA3 bays - sorry but 6 is NOT enough.
* EIGHT port Gigbit ethernet switch INBUILT which can be stacked to another Drobbo for expansion.
* Onboard web server with cloud access and differing levels of account security.
* Automatice disk recovery to spare disk.
* Email and GSM/text notification - technology is cheap enough now and it could send/receive MMS's too while we're at it.
* Realisticly priced WITH these features for around £600
* Next day swap out service if faulty with a 3 year warranty as options.

I don't ask for much do I? Well until something comes along like this, I will stick to rebuilding my useless server, and imaging everything that moves. At least given the time it takes, I KNOW that my data is safe.. any anyone that has ever has the mis-fortune to own a Netgear toaster will know that the paranoia is justified :p

I doubt you will ever get all that. They do do a 8 bay one though with dual gigabit LAN, they have cloud access i think via apps, and no its not £600 lol, the 5 bay one is £500 already!

After considering a WHS server for all of 10 minutes today I've gone back to wanting a Drobo or a DS1010.

I just want something small and elegant with lots of storage. I want it to sit on/under my desk and make minimal noise and take low amounts of power.

I want to be able to stream 1080p content to my Boxee when or if I get it and I want to backup the home machines.

What has put you off a WHS, that would tick all your requirements.

The drobo is not whisper quiet.

My imac is whisper quiet, but the drobo sounds like a PC due to the fan at the back. I have my router in the front room and my imac in my bedroom so I don't mind and may be i am used to the noose level or lack of in the mac but i wouldn't want to sleep with the drobo in the room.

Its not quite a Drobo but......

Well I decided to treat myself to a little extra storage this Christmas and although its not quite on the same level as Raymond's Drobo I'm quite pleased with my NAS.

IMAG0033.jpg

Its a Synology Diskstation DS411J. I bought a 2Tb HD to go with it for now and will expand up to 8Tb as and when i need it :D

Been waiting for that 3TB update for ages now! which is good news, i mean if they can make a 3TB update then hopefully it can go to 4TB or as far as HD/Sata can handle in it's life span. This update basically gives me 50% more capacity without having to buy a new unit!

WIN!

Ive been looking at a NAS for HTPC and photos.....at the moment if something goes.....its gone! but trying to find an affordable 4bay is killing me!

Forget about costs, your data is priceless :p. Well, mine are! It being people's wedding photos but the principle is the same. Find thhe one with the features you want and save up for it.

come along raymond keep up, synology have had 3tb support for months :p

lol, the drobo one may have been out a while but I just haven't checked :p

How easy it that to use Ray, I've been thinking of some sort of NAS for my files and pictures. How easy is it to transfer stuff onto it and back up?
