Hello all!

I'm 13 years old and I decided to start my own semi-budget gaming PC project. Obviously this is my first time ever doing anything like this and, although I double-checked that everything should work I wanted to run it by you guys just in case something was wrong with it. I also included several options for each component in case one was better value for money, or one was not compatible. I would like to keep this as low-cost as possible. My budget is about 500 pounds - 600 pounds. Anyways, here is my list:

+MOTHERBOARD+

Asus P5QL/EPU Intel P43 (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard - 55.99 -

+RAM+

*I already have a brand new 2GB DDR2 RAM stick, and I can keep upgrading DRR2 because the motherboard has 4 Memory slots.

+CPU+

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Socket 775 Quad Core CPU Retail - 116 -

+GRAPHICS CARD+

PEAK NVIDIA GEFORCE 9600GT 512 MB PCI - EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD - 57.95

Vertex3D/ATI Radeon HD 5550 1GB PCI Express 2.1 x 16 DVI/HDMI/VGA Graphics Card - 62.80

SAPPHIRE HD5670 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card - 64.74

SAPPHIRE HD5670 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card - 84.38
+HARD DRIVE+

Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive - 39.97

+OS+

Windows 7 Home Premium - 94.95

+CASE+
(all in Red)

X-case Saturn Midi Tower Case
X-case Venus Midi Tower Case
X-case Mars Midi Tower Case

+PSU+

+ANTIVIRUS+

Not yet decided, any good cheap suggestions?

Thanks so much to anyone who is willing to help me, I wish you well. Also, I would apprieciate it if you were to not try and sell stuff from OcUK. If it is cheaper, or would be more compatible then fair enough. But don't try and sell me anything otherwise.

@ OP, ideally try to avoid 775 chips, as they are going end of life by summer 2011.

Also, take a look at the range of OcUK Pre-built Systems for reccomended hardware choices:

Will obviously work out cheaper if you buy all the components individually and build it yourself, but it's good to look at them for compatible hardware that leave a possibility for guaranteed over clocks in the future :)

it will be worth your while going for a dual core system and a decent gfx card, you have to think about how you might be able to upgrade in the future so you dont want to build something you can never improve without buying a new motherboard and ram as they will be the expensive.
A tri core seems to be the sweetspot for gaming with 4Gb of RAM (thanks to consoles) then the trick is to get a decent graphics card, there are a lot of mid range to look at the moment 460/6850/5770 it all depends on the budget you have.

That's considerable, but I kinda wanted to use my own ideas... I know that you're just trying to help, but I would rather just have someone check the rig and maybe suggest better/cheaper components. Also, I have a CD drive. Thanks :]

Oops, sorry if I sounded rude. I wanted this as my own project and wanted only for it to be checked, but on second thought and from reading through the replies again that's probably the best options. I will add these suggestions to my notes and then have another look around at everything.

As Freelanc3r said, you really shouldn't be using socket 775, particularly with your budget- having 1 stick of DDR2 doesn't really swing it. Most people sticking with 775 already have something like a Q6600.

AM3 tends to be the best socket if you're on a budget, and there's plenty of variety in the market as per cores, clock speed, overclockability and price. I'd recommend checking them out.
