Here is my kitchen:

I retiled the backsplash / sink area this weekend and am now wondering what colour grout I should use.

With the tiles being dark I was thinking a light grout might look quite 'dramatic' and lift the tiles a bit. However a white grout might be a nightmare for a kitchen with all the food and smoke no?

Then I thought a light grey would show off the lines quite well but still hide grubbiness to some degree.

Then how about a grout like anthracite to closely match the tiles? This might be the 'safe' option in terms of low maintenance, but then it might look too gloomy.

Would be good to hear some opinions from seasoned kitchen tilers / style gurus!

If any PS whizzes fancy sticking some grout lines in there to give me an idea then that'd be great.

The white grout in my kitchen has never discoloured. I don't think the colour of your grout is a big issue tbh, I'd change your handles though :D

Grey is best for dark tiles IMO, unless you expect it to get drenched with water, in which case a dark grey is better.

I'd avoid white in a kitchen.

^ Haha. Lovely lampshade.

Light grey would probably look nice. Is that white beading you have used?

Not beading, plastic tile trim.

Did you seal the grout with anything? How old is the grout?

Yep, the units and work surface are next on the list!

Stay away from white in a kitchen it will discolour.

Go with white as it will stop the trim from sticking out like a sore thumb.
If you use British Adhesives Ltd grout it has a stain resistant additive in it and also an antifungal agent.
You can get the grout from Topps Tiles

That's a point. White or ivory was all the tile trim they had at the time unfortuntely.

I'll check it out, thanks.

I think I'm going to risk the white and get some grout sealant to try and stop it discolouring. Might be a bit risky but I think the contrast will look quite striking.

If it only lasts a year before looking **** I'll rake it all out and try grey instead!

Just tiled my hearth for my multifuel stove with very similar coloured slate tiles. I'd recommend darkish grey.

In fact I can sell you a tub with only a tiny bit of grout used if you want :p.

I can't tell if the grout's been sealed as the tiles were newly put up when we boght the place. I assume they weren't as the builders were lazy with other things (newbuilds tsk tsk)! They are about 3-4 years old now and sstill as white as the tiles - I do clean the place regularly though!

I've already got some grey grout left over from the floor, thanks anyway ;).

Ok cheers.

Finished for anyone that's interested. Went for ivory grout in the end for the contrast without the willingness to show dirt. Sealed with a grout finishing spray so dirt shouldn't be a problem anyway.
