Martial Artists... Your opinions please

TKD is one of the worst martial arts out there, its laughable, what are you talking about!?

Having done TKD for 8 years and tournament fighting for the majority of that I would have to agree - the current state of TKD is laughable especially when you look at the Olympics implementation of it - it makes me cringe to watch it.

I to would be looking into the likes of Judo or Aikido for door work. However I would also be prepared to have to more forcefully defend yourself at which point I would get involved in an MMA style of brawling. There are no two ways about it - if things get out of hand then you want it to be over as quickly as possible.

Part of being a doorman is having the self control to be able to correctly gauge situations and react in a reasonable way.

The last place I’d want to be while scrapping in a nightclub would be on the floor, it leaves you totally open to any drunken idiot coming along and sticking the boot in.
Personally I’d look into something like C&R (that was mentioned earlier) and also boxing.

I'd also recommend Judo. When I used to do it there were 4 Police Officers, 2 Prison Guards and 2 Security Guards that I used to train with. (It did feel odd being the IT bloke training with them)

It's not just about throwing someone on the floor and rolling about with them, many practical uses with armlocks and strangle holds that would help with restraining people with your intended job.

some people have been watching too much UFC.
the guy is a bloody doorman not a prize fighter ready to be champ, if he knocked people out or got them in armbars on the street when the police arrived how would that look? granted quite comical and a great pub-tale to tell but he'd probably get the sack and never be allowed to work the doors again.
my vote would be for aikido or judo.

Door Supervision? Can you not just do what majority of them seem to do if a problem arises, and crush the problem with their massive heads, or their overinflated ego.

Use martial arts in door work and you're going to get in serious trouble. I'm also not sure of the implications for your license.

C&R is what you want, if anything, and there are loads of courses around. I've been involved in teaching some of them, and most door staff are wise enough to know they don't want fancy stuff, just C&R.

For your personal life, Aikido and Judo are great fun.

I'd probably do a little of boxing and stick with your BJJ, whilst its real world application isn't great, they both do wonders for your job description, and of course, if it does come down to it and its time to stand and bang, your quids in.

You are joking?

BJJ for a doorman. Yes the ideal position to be in is on the ground, when you are likely to to outnumbered.

As has already been said, something like judo or even a form of sambo.

I would have thought something with throws, and keeps people at a distance would be best suited.

+1 for Judo. You dont really want to strike with someone you want off the premises, so Muay Thai, Boxing, etc is off the table.

Which makes sense.

Going into a Karateka stance on CCTV does not look good to juries. Grabbing to escort out or wildly thrashing at someone to protect yourself/others does.

Fair point, but you have to agree, they are a lot of idiotic people who work the doors who think they're "well 'ard!"

Not saying "All" bouncers are, just Colchester has its fair share :)

Oh yes. Like any related industry there is a selection pressure towards the reta.... less rational worker :)

Yeah... Full Moon where people seem to revert to their usually dormant animalistic instincts and lose the ability to reason... Usually ending up with a much higher frequency of incidents requiring reasonable force to resolve!
