A mate of mines grpahics card has gone pop over the weekend (was an 8800 GTX I think!) and he's looking for a decent replacement that will last him a while!
He says his budget is around £250 but I'm not sure what the rest of his PC specs are!

Any advice on the current best bang-for-buck card out there in that sort of price range??

Cheers,

StevieP

Either a GTX470 or an HD6870, (both nearer £200 than £250). If you want the best performance for £250, then for £10 more there is the Gigabyte GTX470 SOC which performs around the same level as an HD5870.

He cant wait - as I said his existing card has gone pop and he cant go a few days without his fix of gaming! ;)

In truth he should wait a little while to see whats coming next from ATI. Surly he can put a realy old crappy card in and at least game atreally crap settings?

All in the knowledge that his patience is going to net him a kick arse card...

He doesnt have any spare cards to put in and to be honest I've a feeling that his CPU will be a bottleneck to any "kick-arse" card anyway!

He bought an OC system and it must have been a good 2-3 years ago so I', guessing the CPU will be a bit dated now!

The MSI one has military class component don't you know..

Military Class Components
- Hi-C Cap provides more precise GPU voltage and has better stability.
- SSC (Solid State Chock) for No Buzz noise.
- All Solid CAP for longer lifespan

I think he's leaning towards the GTX470 - is there any reason to go for the MSI one ahead of the overclocked Gigabyte one:

or

Thanks......

Out of those two Id get the overclocked version, simply becuase I have never overclocked a gpu before.

But, if you want a cooler running quiter 470 maybe consider:

But look at benchmarks before deciding etc..
