Basically im into weightlifting and for about a year ive been improving my diet by increasing my protein, i also take protein drinks called phd pharma whey. Anyway hypathetical question (so it aint a personal medical question) can it cause blood in the urine?

This hypathetical person was doing some deadlifts thursday and he increased the weight and managed to do his 5x5 set and felt some really good DOMs on his lower back, im sure it is just DOMs and nothing else.

I doubt it was actually blood? I'm not sure if I was just drunk, different lighting, or what, but I did notice a slight bit of red colourisation in my urine t'other day, and I've only just been on the whey for a week or two now :)

Protein shakes can color your urine. I have tried many over the years and the blue raspberry ones always turn my urine, without failure :)

A high protein diet will definitely put more strain on your kidneys than your average diet. But unless you're eating a ridiculous amount you'll be fine. Sticking with the 1.5g per lean lb of body weight will serve you well and not put your health at risk

Diet? No, unless that hypothetical person is just eating protein.

If enough cells are ruptured in a workout or get suitably dehydrated, kidneys will start dumping myoglobin/etc. into urine, giving it a slightly different (brown I think). However, we're talking SERIOUS amounts of both which I don't think would happen through a single workout (think limb amputation and marathon running).

Blood in urine can, however, be any number of things not related to diet (especially depending on the colour/amount of blood) and workouts, so I would be tempted to RTM this thread.

This, and make sure you're drinking a lot of water.

mrthingyx, as I think's already been suggested, chances are it's not blood at all, just a red/brown colorisation and nothing to worry about :)

Really? Have you seen this hypothetical urine sample? Are you aware of all the potential colourants in urine and their source of issue?

Could be anything im afraid OP. Head to a doctor in doubt. I'm eating about 110g protein a day (im 190lb) and have been doing so for the past 2 months and i havent noticed any differences in my pee (not that ive been particularly holding a yellow dulux shades card to it however!).

This. Blood in the urine would lead to other issues worth investigating.

DOMs relating to your question is irrelevant.

Yellow ??

Should be clear my good sir !! :p

Depends, if you drink lots of water and dont eat properly then it should be clear.

If your taking in so many vitamins and nutrients that your body has an excess then the colour should be neon yellow/green, it should be so bright that you think wow that looks radioactive.

If your urine is dark though, there is a problem, dark yellow/green, or brown.

So to sum it up, if its bright your fine, if its dark then there is a problem somewhere, whether that be dehydration or something a lot worse, only a doctor could tell you.

Clear just means your well hydrated or your body is trying to flush something out (after a few beers, etc).

Urine should be a pale straw colour.

If it's clear then you're well, possibly over hydrated, and could be flushing minerals./itamins out before the body has absorbed them properly.

If it's dark colour and smelly like brandy then you're severly dehydrated.

Pale straw and you're doing fine.

Never had whey affect the colour of my urine and I have taken Phd Pharma Whey for year a few years ago. See your GP if it persists

;)

I know mate, I just use it to gauge my hydration, I fluctuate between the extremes of clear and neon though

**pee update**

I had a good old pee and i think i would say its brownish.
The only liquids that go into my body is water/apple juice/orange squash/milk.
I wouldnt say im not dehydrated im drinking my usual amount.
Should i try and drink a lot of water today and see if it makes my pee clear and if it doesnt itll just show the brown substance more.

Thinking of posting a pic of my pee would that be helpful. Not sure whether to show you in the toilet or pee in a jar?

nobody wants to see your pee dude.

you should be drinking 3 litres of water per day. thats 1 pint every 2 hours your awake. so 2 normal glasses per hour.

do you think your well hydrated now?

We dont need a picture you need to get to the Dr's if its bothering you, even if it is nothing its definately worth a quick check up

How many people actually drink 3 litres per day? I probably manage more like 1.5. One pint of water every two hours, I'd be going to the loo every couple of hours too!

I think I manage it, if not more. Always got a pint of water with me or a flask at least.

But yes I'm in and out of the toilet tbh :o
