I'm shaking as I write this....

Had this happen to me a few years back, was sad indeed, I was at a similar junction crossing a 30mph dual carriage way. I looked and double looked and moved into the road to cross into leigh valey technopark (tottenham hale) for anybody that knows the area, as i did this I took another take left and saw a bike approaching me at silly speeds (ambulance and police on scene suggested that he hit me at 60-70mph). I guess he had hammered it off the lights which are just out of view around a bend a few hundred meters up the road.

I tried to put my foot down to move across faster but the bike had the same idea and went in front rather than behind, it was much the same scene the bike hit the anti-role bar of my escort cab side on, the impact bent the chassis and broke a front axle, but the bike was in bits. Honestly I thought the guy was dead at the scene, he was riding a high powered bike in a t-shirt and jeans and if I am honest I didn't think he was going to make it.

I was arrested on the spot and told that I would hear from the police, anyway I rang the police and found out what hospital the guy was at, although I know I probably shouldn't for insurance purposes I kept calling and the hospital who were happy to keep me up to date with his condition. It was a good four months before I received a letter from the police, fully expecting to open up a court summons; I opened the letter to find that the guy who hit me had been charged rather than myself for driving without a licence or insurance.

This was a bad time for me, I felt very much responsible even though there was very little I could do. My insurance company sucked up the costs and I was insured against uninsured drivers so it had no effect on my no claims. It really is not nice, I kept thinking what if for ages but that really didn't make it any better.

Anyway the criminal proceedings went in my favour. The civil proceedings are still being worked out to this day. I just hope that the guy in this case is as "lucky" as the guy that hit me in that he escapes with his life.

Sorry for the long post but this one struck a chord with me.

Wiser, or just safer? It's certainly wise to anticipate the stupid actions of fools driving cars.

+1

Safer yes thats a given, but car drivers need to be educated on the fact their 2ton vehice is a weapon on wheels when driven by dizzy drivers who arent aware of their surroundings, but if they pull out on a bike and go into your drivers door, your most likely going to be mangled too.

threads like this that warm the heart

too many times do you see women stranded at the side of the road, or cars involved in accidents where nobody wants to know.

This is precisely the reason that I have pipes that sound like a flight of lancaster bombers from three streets away.

Hardley Movinson? ;)

Loud pipes count for nothing if the driver has his/her radio cranked up. You have to count on more than that sort of logic to stay alive.

No, son.

It's a 1600cc Yamaha. Looks like a harley but better.

I also have a 130db air horn for blasting at people at junctions who aren't looking my way. I've scared the crap out of a few women drivers who weren't looking right. That was when I had quiet pipes though. With these Vance&Hines they hear it before I get to horn distance. Both of these features are used in conjunction with defensive riding.

I was knocked off myself 17 years ago so I know all about it.

I used to ride with a loud can and it did help. However, this crash I didn't hear the crunch as had my music on. First I realised, was that a bike didn't come out the other side of my vision, and then I saw the guy rolling around in the road. The crunch would have been very loud too and I didn't hear it.

It made local news. They reckon he was 46 but not sure if that was an error or I poorly judged his age at the scene. He did have a helmet on and bloody face :(
They say he had leg injuries which was obvious, but not whether he lived. I'm still trying to find out but without a surname, the hospital can't trace him.

I have quite a bit of experience with bikes and drive a car day to day and I kind of resent that statement.

While I appreciate there are complete tools behind the wheels of cars there is plenty of bikers who don't act with regards to safety as well.

Its easy to make the sweeping statements of cars being at blame but its always easy to blame them. % wise I bet the total to idiot ratio is no different but unfortunately the idiots who are car drivers can lead to more devastating results.

Hope Uri is ok, and you too OP. Never nice situation to see never mind being as involved as you were.

Hospital nor Police will give out details on him due to data protection. I've tried different routes to no avail.

This is strange as in my incident they gave me a full name and address. Followed up by a letter from my local police with his details. One of my neighbours who is also police suggested to me when I asked him that this was not normal however.

Mind you I was involved rather than somebody trying to help.

Edit: Also I hope the op and Uri is ok. No news is good news.
