Could the death of PC gaming be its saviour?

I was just thinking about the way it's been going this last few years, and about how it seems quite inevitable that more and more studios will go under as publishers bail out because of a lack of idiots with money to prey upon.

Following on I thought that once the studios are all dead, and the money grabbing, rush it out the door in any auld state, bolt some DLC on publishers have lost interest, maybe it could hit some kind of revival.

There are undoubtedly a lot of talented people out there that might group together to make games the way they actually want because of a love for creating them. Yes, it would be slow but with the internet being so vast at least it'd be easily distributed without the need for evil publishers.

I was looking at some of the mods for the Total War series, to see if there was anything new, and it really is amazing how fantastic some of the work is, and that's what set me off thinking. So does anybody think this is a possible future, or are we destined to pay over the odds for unfinished rubbish for the rest of time?

total war has jaw dropping mods! I play a lot of games with amazing mod communities that make the origional games just amazing. the death of PC gaming is a long way away. so dont worry about it for now :D

yes there are many talented people out there who would jump at the chance to be part of a development team but if were talking about FPS games then building an engine from scratch to compete with console engines then i really can not see it happening.

This is why the mod community can pull off some great things is because they already have the engine/tools to do so, without those you are looking at years building an engine by people who arent being paid or funds for continued development.

This is why big companies rule supreme atm and can dish out the same tripe on the same engine for years.

i would like the be part of a development team for a game don't lack the skills to build any type of engine or mod an existing one :( the only thing i can do is map edit on ut99 :)

The full Unreal 3 engine are available for free to developers and they only have to pay Epic a slice of the profits once the game makes over a certain amount.

So people are just going to use the unreal 3 engine for the next 10+ years?

If PC gaming is to be revived then engines will have to be built otherwise its pointless.

One thing i would say is i'd rather play a heavily modified unreal 3 engine game made by communities with good stories and gameplay then the overhyped corporate ***** that make me want to puke when i think of games like Deux Ex.

CS was just a Half-Life mod created by lovers of the game. Valve of course eventually bought it but CS has been the most popular online FPS game ever as far as i'm aware.

No reason it can't happen again

But the Unreal 3 engine isn't the only one available for free and it's not normally the stubbling block to deveopment. It's time and money that are the biggest problem. Look at the Black Mesa mod, it's a lack of time that the developers have to spend on the project that are the main reason for it not being released yet.
