Hey, tried posting this in the new vegas thread but didnt get any help. Download today via steam and cant even play it. It crashes when i go to start a new game and I get a windows message telling me that fall out new vegas has encountered a problem. Ive googled this and I seen somebody saying download the d3d9.dll file as its missing, Ive verified the game through steam so dont kn ow how this could happen. When I move the file over to my fallout folder the game works but detects my card as an nvidia card and recommends medium settings. I put them all on high anyway but will I be getting the best out of it this way?

Have you tried downloading d3d9.dll and trying that? I personally dont know about this problem, but if that fixed it for someone else, then it might for you.

Yeah, this is when it auto detects my card as an nvida card. Thats confusing as it is. It then works but im not sure its performing as it should mainly due to the game being buggy anyway. I dont think re-downloading would make a difference

Nope never had an nvida card, just tried it again. detects my card as an 7900 when I use that dll file but the game actually works. so annoying, I just want to play :(

The problem sounds like your pc doesnt have any DX9 dll's.

As your running a 5000 series ATI I assume your running Win7, windows 7 uses Dx11, so has not DX9 binaries.

However these should have been installed when the game installed.

I have had installation problems in the past thos with steam.

Try manually downloading Dx9 from the microsoft website. It wont harm your pc or take it back from dx11 to dx9, it will just add the dx9 dlls to yiur computer... which the game should have done anyway!

Ive had pleny dx9 games in the past though. Ill download it again I guess

Id hope so Calneon, but if it detects it as another card im not sure if it would take full advantage of mine. It wasnt exactly a smooth 60fps when I tried it before but its hard to troubleshoot when an unfinished/untested game is released

I have a GTX280 and it shows up as a 7900, yet I get 60fps at max settings. It doesn't matter at all.

The custom Dll sets the game to detect the card as the 7900 or 8800. As long as you manually change the graphics settings to what you want, you'll be fine.

I presume you had the same issue then?
No, it said it improves performance so I used it.

"This .dll file is essentially a light-wrapper for a 'supported' video card's .dll, which tricks the game into configuring its FaceGen software (which was causing a performance problem) in a more efficient manner." (HT @ "4000qails")

This will make your game run nearly like fallout 3 ran on your same computer. Like it should since there was very little visual improvements."
