I've been doing kickboxing for about a month, twice a week. We train in a sports hall and i try to go barefoot as its far easier to kick this way, however during the fitness training the skin off the bottom of my toes has been coming off recently, it's moderatly painful- is this just my feet hardening up, or should i look for something to protect them - i've tried micropore tape, but that just comes off, and its really annoying to keep having to go back to my bag to re-apply it..

-One other thing is when i punch repeatadly my thumb digs into the knuckle of my 2nd furthest finger (if that makes sense :P ).. It's got a little better but it usually bleeds, this doesnt happen with my left hand for some reason, and it's not simply a case of cutting my nails shorter. I've also tried taping both my thumb and finger with micropore tape, but since i have to make a fist the tape usually comes off....

any suggestions/ insight would be much appreciated.

Unfortunatly you'll have to put up with your feet for now, I wouldn't bother trying to put tape on them as they're still going to be rubbing; maybe take a week off and let your skin toughen up if it's not having time to in between sessions. About your hands, are you wrapping them before you start punching?

thanks i'l have a look at that tape... i'm keeping an eye on my feet, the skin seems to be healing, i'm afraid im enjoying kickboxing too much to take a week off :P, if it gets bad i'l just have to wear trainers ... No i havn't got any wraps at the moment, but i'm just on pads at the moment, no proper sparring. (which makes a bleeding knuckle even more surprising)

Wraps are probably more important when you're hitting the pads than when you are sparring as you'll be punching them harder and getting more feedback. I'd recommend you get some ASAP they can be had for afew quid.

As for your feet, wearing shoes probably isnt a good idea either as the skin is still going to be rubbing (although not as much) it's just going to take time for it to harden.

Can't shed much light on the feet thing I'm afraid, never been one for kicks.

Although I might be able to help with the hand thing, unless you have really odd hand dimensions your thumb should sit so the end is covering the middle section of your index and middle finger, I can barely even get mine to touch the 2nd furthest without changing the shape of my hand, weakening the entire structure of the fist.
Are you using gloves of any kind? Fingerless MMA style? Boxing? Bag gloves? I think these could be the problem. A few of my friends had problems with their thumbs from using poor gloves. Try using some boxing gloves where the thumb is stitched in the correct place so you can't move it for a few weeks, then when you go back to using whatever gloves you normally use it might have moved itself naturally into the right place.

I'm a little unsure how you're connecting to cause the thumb to dig into the finger, and without seeing you punch I can't say for sure, maybe ask a coach/trainer to have a look for you?

Hope this can help you improve it.:)

Hi there the hands looked to have been covered as its said hand wraps are best or even using your gloves for hitting the pads [kinda encouraged now a days]

as for your feet ,its simple just wear trainers ,ive been teaching a while now and just about everyone wears them ,including me

the only time you cant wear them is competition ,and to be honest even when your fighting ,the last thing you will feel is your feet ,letting them heal by wearing something is your best bet ,the toughning up your feet is kinda an old thing, toughen them up for what

You've answered your own question

My 2p:

Your feet will harden and as you improve your form, you will stop dragging your feet when you move and land kicks.

As for you hands, you are bunching your fists incorrectly, a fist is a square block of your 4 fingers with your thumb just tucked in over your index finger, it sounds like you are really bunching your hand together, if you ever hit anybody for real, you will break your hand.

Just a thought, what is the sports hall like? Are the bottoms of your feet filthy when you come out?

the hall is fairly clean, but yes my feet are dirty by the end...

today i concentrated on leaving my thumb further out and had no problems, so thats all sorted :) ... also i left my trainers on for the fitness and took them off for pad work, all good... i'l get some hand wraps eventually, but thanks for all the advice..
