Hey all,
I've been on the search for what seems like a lifetime for a decent, reasonably priced, high res, portable, laptop.

I prefer 13" screens, I would *consider* 14" but i do travel quite a lot. In recent times the closest theres been is the Envy 13 and the Sony Z series. Both are waaaaay too expensive.

Any ideas?

You mention the Envy 13 being way too expensive, what's your budget exactly?

I'd say take a look at the ThinkPad Edge series, but their 13" are 1366x768.

bout a grand i spose. I was looking at the Edge series, I'd kinda like something with a bit more punch. I know I'm being picky! lol

I also know HP are trying to shift the envy 13 like its infected but they only have the low res version in the UK

Why can't they just bring the radiance screen to the UK.

There aren't that many manufacturers offering high-res screens as an option for notebooks, let alone high-res as standard.

Dell and Sony offer high-res screen options. But the Vaio's laptops aren't that portable. Unless you go for the Vaio Z, version 13'', which is ultra expensive and exclusive (although very nice).

Thats one thing that annoys me slightly, and it does cost quite a bit more to upgrade for a better resolution.

Exhibit A:

Dell mini 1012 - native is 1024x600 i think, and i THINK again they do an upgrade for 1366x768 resolution, but im not too sure on that one, thijnk i saw it somewhere, and even with the new 1018, i havent really looked at that yet on their site but it looks quite nice

EDIT:

In terms of size and in comparison with the 1012 :)

THere are also the Lenovo Business class, but also very expensive. I'm afraid it's not really an option. I was thinking Dell Adamo / Vostro too, but I don't know.

Best would be to go for a sub-£400 CULV 13'', and stick to the standard res. Maybe the next line of notebooks (AMD fusion processors) will bring some improvements on screen quality and resolutions. Seems like we're going backwards nowadays on notebook screens.

he could also hook it up to an external monitor when static at home or university :)

Don't count on it. OEMs are, erm, politely asked not put high resolution screens on AMD machines (apparently)

Depends on your budget but ASUS Zenbook UX32VD is amazing (typing on it right now). Full 1080p mat ips display is excellent and HDD/RAM is upgradable, but also very thin/light.
