My Golf - Update thread

Are you going to put any sort of filter over the carbs?

Yeah, I'll probably just get some filter socks. Won't be driving it yet anyway as my tax/mot has just ran out so I need to MOT it first. Emissions will be interesting ;)

After that it's time to get it on the RR :)

Sweet :)

Looks really sweet in there. Hopefully hear/see it soon. My offer of slr pics still stands but im out of action having just had knee surgery for the time being.

No probs buddy, will definitely when you're fit again :)

Are you using the stock throttle cable? I suspect you already know this but just incase you dont. There is a little hard plastic surround that the throttle cable goes through at the bulkhead and eventually the cable will eat into this plastic casing and cause it to be sticky. New throttle cable, easy to fit! Had a few older mk2s do this.
But i'm sure you already know this :p

I wasn't aware of that issue, no. Thanks for that, I will get a new cable as the sticking throttle is annoying. Car is running a treat though, can't wait to get it MOT'd so I can drive the thing properly :)

Awesome :) Would love see some vids of it being driven with those carbs on, should imagine it sounds pretty throaty under load!

Will get some vids when I've sorted the exhaust and throttle cable. It does sound lovely

Just been reading this and it looks like a fantastic little project...

What sort of power are you expecting from this then?

Hard to say as it's a pretty unique spec, also bear in mind that it's still only an 8v. I would guesstimate ~160ish.

Was the car injection or carb before Drex? Only reason im asking is if your keeping the old injection pump its going to be putting waaay to much pressure into the R1 pump.

'Twas injection (k-jet), the injection pump isn't doing anything now though, the lift pump and R1 pump are enough to push/pull the fuel through the injection pump, car is running just fine set up like this :)

So I took it in to be MOT'd today and................it failed :( :(

Needs some welding done, nothing too bad (three smallish holes) but the position is close to suspension mounting points hence a failure. Will get my mate to weld them up next week. No problems other than that, so not the end of the world :)

Anyway, I was soon cheered up because these arrived today:

Yes, they are el-cheapo coilovers but I thought I'd give them a go. Fanimold was cheap too, but the quality seems great.

We have those coilovers on the Golf.
The top washer for holding the damper rod below the spring cap on the rears is not very strong - try and replace it with a decent pressed washer (the gold coloured ones that are on the stock top mounts at the rear that are sort of bell shaped are a perfect fit)

Otherwise they are fine to be honest. Plenty of chainlube on the threads to stop them rusting.
