Hi all,

Just a few questions, Please can someone advise.

I have a 3 year old rig:

Q6600 @3.2
4 GB 800 ddr2 @ 5-5-5-15
4870 512mb
Antec true power 750 PSU
P35 ds3r - So only 1 16xPCIE
Hanns.G 27.5 1900 x 1200

I don't really want to upgrade untill sandy-Ivy bridge comes along.. 22nm Ivy sounds nice. But games are starting to stress. Will def be going for a 6970 later this month (Not a fanboy, Dont care about all that)

My question is will my cpu hold me back much?.

Also my PSU has 2 x 6Pin PCI E, getting a 8 Pin adapter, will this be enough power, will it hinder performance for the 6970?.

As long as i can game @ 1900 x 1200 Lots of eye candy, I will be happy till i make a new rig.

Thanks Guy's

:)

as above poster, the CPU is more then fine for the time being and gaming.

That GFX may need looking at considering the resolution you want to play at. also what kind of hard drive are you using? An SSD can have the huge "feelable" impact when it come to gaming.

Cheers for the answers, Thought as much. Quiet a few people in the same boat as me with these specs, This rig was all the rage back then, And here we are 3 years on and all is still well, Damn that was a good buy, hope i can do the same in a few months time.

I have a ssd Falcon 60 gb for the OS and 1 or 2 games.

Will the PSU be enough as i have to use an adapter to goto 8 pin on one of them. Not to worried about this tho.

:)

Why would you need to use adapter? Antec TruePower 750 should have 2x6pin and 2x6+2pin:

And if you are getting a 6970, I would suggest you try pushing your Q6600's overclock a bit higher to make sure you'd be making the most out of the card.

Thanks for the reply. You completely threw me with that last post. I thought I did have a 750. Obviously not. I just took it out. It's a TSP-650. Maybe dementia is setting in after all.
****
Would this throw the cat amongst the pigeons? If I have to go for a 6950 instead, it won't be the end of the world. At least then I wouldn't have to mess around with adaptors and could overclock it to death as usual. ;)
