50" TV for £750

Hi,

Can someone suggest me a good quailty TV around the £700-750 price range?

Me and my brother are getting my parents a new TV for xmas \ mums birthday, they currently have a Pioneer 50 inch rear projection TV, which is around 12 years old, and was very good in its day! the viewable screen is 49"

I have noticed that all 50" TVs are plasmas rather than LCD. Do plasmas still have problems over time and need regassing? or shall I get a 48" LCD TV instead? The TV will be mainly used for TV and sky sports football, they wouldnt watch many bluray films on it I dont think.

The TV will be connected upto a Meridan Audio system (5000 range) which were very expensive at the time, but its also around 12 years old.

On a side note, how would them speakers match up with todays ones? has speaker tech improved by much during that time?

if anyone can suggest me any TVs that would be great, thanks
 
Plasma is the better choice IMO, handles motion better (sports) and performs much better on SD material.

Given your budget, I'd look at

LG 50PK590
Panasonic TXP50X20
Panasonic TXP50S20
Panasonic TXP50G10 / TXP50G20

Meridian produce great equipment, and given that amplifier/speaker technology hasn't moved on in the last few decades, they'll still be great. The only things really that have change are aesthetics and the A/V side of things - surround codecs, video handling etc. If it's a surround system, it's probably lacking in features, but the sound quality itself will still be good. If it's stereo, nothing has changed at all really :)
 
TXP50G10 is an outstanding plasma and also has a great look and stand imo, I have one and its even better if you hex edit it for multiple gamma options.

anyone got any recommendations on 48 inch LCDs? my dad is a bit put off by Plasmas, but I will try and talk him round!

I've not seen many 48" LCDs. Normal sizes are 40, 42, 46.

I too am put off buying a plasma. All I read about is a endless problems people are prepared to put up with in order to get better blacks.
 
48" LCD...Not for that price mate.

Why is he put off by plasmas?

I have had no issues with mine, and dont see any in the future. I have watched films on mine, used it as a monitor and played games with no issues at all. Infact i had no IR from gaming what so ever and it was F1 2010 so there was a static hud!!!
 
you can get the lg pk590 from syrruc with a 10% price match garuantee over the price from temoc , bringing the price down nicely, i shall be doing this verrrrrry soon me thinks!
