OH NOES! He bought a DIESEL!

Im afraid you are incorrect Fox

That is a pretty cool feature though, I read about it recently as their is now an iPhone app that you can download to interact directly with your iDrive. From the description it made out features such as sending maps etc only worked on brand new models. So that's cool!

The iPhone app integration is coming in the future but isn't there yet from what I remember.

Its already working but you have to have an 08 onward car for it to work. On the connecteddrive website if your car is able to use it there is an option to enable remote features. As well as send nav info you can control ventilation, flash the lights, unlock the doors etc.

My car sadly is to old for it so I don't have the option on the connecteddrive portal and the app gives me a "security questions are undefined error".

Does it work with 58 plate on E90/91/92/93?

From what it says yes 2008my cars work but with limited functions. The 10/10 onward 5,7 and 11/10 x3 get the whole function list.

It does look good one option on the 10/10 cars allows you to remotely activate the cars climate system. I wonder if that needs any additional options spec'd on the car it would be great to have the car either cooled down or warmed up before you get to it.

There is already an option for timed ventilation settings in idrive. I would imagine the remote system would be the same. Probably doesn't have any control over the A/C itself so can only cool with ambient air from outside and unless there's a webasto heater fitted probably can't warm the car either.

Not sure, perhaps it starts the engine to use the climate?

If it works the same as the one in the idrive it runs for a given amount of time from the battery and then will not allow it to work again until the engine has run for a given period to replenish the charge.

Assuming it's the same DVD based iDrive system as in Dad's late 2008 E60?

After the first few weeks I've never used the postcode based inputs for the Navigation. It does work, but is horribly clunky. All I ever use is Google Maps from a computer, and now it works from the My BMW iPhone App too :).

Re the DVDs, some of them contain firmware updates as well as newer maps. I don't use the copies found online as lots of the POIs have been removed to make them fit on a single layer DVD (cars on older firmwares can't read dual layer DVDs) and the speed cameras are out of date :(.
What I do is acquire ;) a copy of the latest map DVD (full, with all the POIs) and then add in the speed cameras myself from our PocketGPSWorld subscription. That way I know they're accurate and I update it far more regularly than the ones online.

No, yours has the slightly revised iDrive (But not the heavily revised HDD based system).

Oh right yeah that rings a bell :). Well the postcode input is still crap on it!

Can the guys with HDD based systems update the maps soo easily (i.e. like our pirate DVDs) and get speed camera POIs on them? As I imagine it being a right pain on a HDD system compared with our simple DVDs!

Assuming it works the same as the e90 HD based drive it's a dealer only thing and they charge quite a bit to do it.

Rilot, how does this compare to the A8 you had... I know you had issues with the A8 under warranty, but as in terms of drive/comfort etc etc how does it feel compared to the A8?

Drive is better, comfort is better, build quality is vastly better. Ride is about the same.
I would be happy in either car to be honest but the BMW feels more complete as a package.

Might take a test drive, i was never a fan of the 7's styling but the facelift does look much better.

I have similar issues with the S class, im just not a fan of the styling while the A8 is the safe boring choice for me

edit: hows the box on the 7? I find the A8's is ok but revs too high in most cases

Box is fine. I'd say the A8 changes more smoothly and is more involving in manual mode but it's fine. No complaints.

WTF, my E60 does this anyway through the use of timers. It preheats or cools the car based on the time I tell it to start, and then stop.
