GTX580 specs and benchmarks

Is it possible, and dont burn me here, that these are just fully working 480 chips that have been set aside? Only bit that makes me think no is the increased texture units.

Exchange rate...........you need to look at list price in dollars.

$499 is the "normal" launch price for Nvidia, sometimes $549.

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2007/05/02/nvidia_geforce_8800_ultra/1 £530

http://www.anandtech.com/show/1370/5 6800 ultras $530

http://www.anandtech.com/show/1717

7800 GTX $600

http://www.anandtech.com/show/1861

7800GTX 512MB $700

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2116/17

8800gtx and GTS $599 and $449 respectively.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2222

8800 ultra $830 seriously, even I didn't remember it being that high.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2549

280GTX $650

Now remember the 4870 launched AFTER the 280GTX

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2711

285GTX, first high end card post AMD crashing pricing $400.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/...-gtx-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-

Finally the 480gtx, still only $499, frankly a massive shift in Nvidia pricing since AMD went all small core on their ass.

So I wouldn't say a SINGLE CARD EVER launched at $499 is their "normal pricing", infact given that as far back as 2004 its always been above $500, and steadily increasing till AMD got their hands on ATI, I would say was their "usual" pricing model was between $550-700 generally increasing year on year. Unsurprisingly, the 480gtx/470gtx make massive losses for the company at the $499 pricing and below so I'd hardly say they were "aimed" at that pricing, but forced there. Consider the rate of increase in price up to the 285GTX when AMD hobbled their pricing, I'd of expected the 480GTX/470GTX to be aiming at $700/$600 pricing, where it might have made a profit.

I did wonder, thing is for how long have Nvidia paraded the line that "yields are fine, theres nothing wrong" that you did assume they would eventually release a 485GTX, like I said, even me who has literally no confidence in Nvidia ability to produce a huge core assumed they could make a few on each wafer, enough for one of their unavailable "ultra" models, but they didn't and haven't which is very strange.

They aren't selling 512sp parts as tesla/quadro's, so they must have some stored somewhere, based on the fact they are calling these cards 580gtx's I can't see why Nvidia didn't put 1000 together as 480 Ultras at £1k each just to get rid of them before the 580GTX comes along.

The whole thing is strange, theres an incredibly slim outside change the 580GTX is just those chips, but at this point it doesn't seem likely. Which means the 512spGF100 being unmanufacturable, turned out to be spot on, seeing as no ones ever seen one.

Interesting battle ahead! I got 1000£ of my Christmas bonus to spend.
I just can't stomach paying more that 400£ for a card.
Especially when 2x6870 can be had for 350£.

6970 vs 580 let the battle commence!

Think I'll pass, Nvidia high end does not depreciate much, especially EVGA branded models.

meh, the EVGA 10 year warrenty ect doesnt add value for me so il retract my £190 offer, anyway the 480 wont be high end when Nvidia launch the super duper 580... could maybe do £170 at a push... but il leave it

:p

Right, I don't fancy reading 6 pages of nvidia VS ATI fanboy comments  as I'll only join in probably :p

So to sum up please:

Are these new nvidia cards actually going to run at decent/normal temperatures?

Will we need to have a PSU of like 700W or greater?

Are these likely to cost as much as what new nvidia cards usually cost when first released i.e. over £480?

And lastly will they offer much over ATIs new cards the 6970,6990?

Thanks.

EDIT:

And when are they actually coming out?

Will there be any delays like with fermi last year, the way theres came out 5-6 months late last year after ATI 5xxx series?

lol, mostly NOT fanboy stuff tbh. As ever there is no way to predict some of the things you ask like heat! As who knows, they really might have improved the process, or not. And seriously... you are asking for performance figures already vs other unreleased cards...we cannot know that accurately, only guess.

read the thread lazy boy

:p

Lol, I read a few pages and tbh, there are some pretty fan boyish comments :p

O yeah I know, just wanting a rough idea of things as I might hold out if they are actually decent and compete with ATIs cards, but only if they are priced roughly the same as what ATI will price the 6970/6990, highly doubt that though . Obviously there won't be any reviews or hard evidence of the GPUs yet, but I would like to just know a rough idea of what's happening.

Should have a little disclaimer saying 'George freeman grill feature removed. sorry!' :D

Rofl :p :D

Think this thread might need some new pics of the mean grill cooking machine! ;) :p

The trick that AMD have up their sleeve that must drive Nvidia bananas is fine Nvidia match or beat the 6970, so ATI with there small power efficient cool chips slap two on a pcb and viola you have the fastest graphics card aka AMD 6990!

so, have we established that the wink and smiley from gibbo is infact 580 in the building, or could it be something else ?

Id imagine the 5970 will still still be faster than the 580, looks as if nvidia needs to pull out a new dual gpu board sometime soon.

With the current power draw of the 4xx series and the fact that 5xx will probably be even more power hungry heaters, they will need to supply them with free box of DICE and 2000W PSU, otherwise I can't see 595GTX happening.

I honestly don't think it is the 580 as there has been nothing mentioned at all about it really, unless I am missing something

Could it not be that they may have the ATI 69xx series cards in maybe and have just done the wink and smiley in this thread to make people think that it's the 580 or just doing it for fun :p and to get everyone excited :p
