Has anyone else on O2 been told their iPhone data allowance is now limited to 500 MB?

I changed my O2 PAYG tariff to "Text and Web" a couple of days ago and immediately topped up £10. I then got a text message saying that I have 300 free texts and unlimited internet this month, and if I top up before the 24th of November next month I will get the same. I thought the "Text and Web" tariff had a cap of 500MB internet usage but it looks like mine is unlimited - not bad for £10 a month!

you may find that 'unlimited' really only equates to 500mb, check the small print on the o2 website.

I spoke to several O2 customer representatives; one who checked with his supervisor and another being from the retentions team. The guy who checked with his manager said that it is O2 policy that all customer representatives must notify the customer of the data allowance contract change before they are 'allowed' to change a contract. If the person who changed my contract did not do this, the rep effectively said "something [will] be worked out [with regards to the data allowance]". When I spoke with the retentions team advisor, he said that if the O2 manager who listens to my call finds out that I wasn't told about the new data allowance, O2 will either change my data allowance back to "unlimited" or give me the extra allowance (extra 500 MB) on my contract for free.

Excellent, as I said you might get something out of goodwill - but they certainly aren't legally bound to do this. Good to hear it is company policy though. Next time read the details of the tariff you are asking to switch to though? ;)

I just finished speaking to someone from O2 about my situation. I was basically told that O2 cannot play back my call but there is nothing I can do about the data allowance because O2 has the right to change the data allowance if it gives "suitable notice". The customer rep said that O2 will be enforcing the cap from the middle of this month, which would mean that O2 has given a notice period of about 4 weeks. I can add a bolt-on for another 500 MB allowance for £5 or just live with only 500 MB. Given that I have already used 220 MB in 7 days, I'll probably have to get the bolt-on.

At which point you are entitled to cancel your contract without penalty.

Today I thought that might be the case and am currently trying to find the new iPhone contract terms and conditions on O2's website to find out if that is the case...

I called O2 iPhone Customer Services and a guy named Michael said that the contracts had changed since about the 10th July of this year and any contracts that have new upgrades/downgrades would also have the data allowance change applied this month.

Had wondered about this as I have unlimited data still on my X10, which I upgraded to on the 9th of July :D

I spoke to an O2 rep who directed me to a paragraph on O2's website which basically states that O2 can make any changes to the data allowance that they like as long as they give 30 days notice.

O2 website said:
O2 reserves the right to withdraw or amend this offer at any time on reasonable notice. Participating customers will receive 30 days notice via text message if changes are made to their disadvantage.

My contract does not finish until mid June 2011 but I think I will be switching to the Three network. Three offers much more than O2 does (and everyone else, in fact). I currently pay £30 /mo. and get 300 mins, unlimited texts (FUP of 3000, iirc) and 500 MB. Three currently offers 500 minutes, 5000 3-to-3 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB data.

EDIT:

Sorry, it's apparently the 24th June.

I still don't understand the argument here - O2 didn't change your tariff, you phoned and asked to - twice!

I still have unlimited though.

I have 2 contracts with o2, one I renewed on the 9th of July, the other renewed on 31st October.

The latter states 500mb in account page whereas the former has unlimited.

Seems I was lucky :p

It was the fact that I wasn't aware that the terms and conditions had changed after 24th June that would allow O2 to just make wholesale changes. It was my fault but an O2 rep said I should have been told as there was an internal memo telling the reps to tell people. I will just live with the changes until I can move network next year.
