UK-France Defence Treaties

Meh. France are a more than capable force, much better than people give them credit for.

As long as Sovereignty isn't damaged, bring it on.

Kinda funny to see comments from a load of civvies insulting Frenchman who have the balls to join the armed forces.

What difference would it make if I was in the Marines and I said the French are cheese eating surrender monkeys?

Don't you get the hypocrocy of insulting servicemen for cowardice when the person doing the insulting has never risked their lives for their country?

I do. I dont however, understand why someone who is in the army is somehow more entitled to throw insults at the French than I am.

Have I got to be in the armed forces before I am allowed to form an opinion? After all, we would all go from the same historical events.

I dont hate the French by the way, I'm just interested.

Everyone has an opinion, I just find it a little odd that people who will never serve in the armed forces questioning the integrety & courage of those who do.

Think what you like Ed, my opinion counts for no more than yours.

The French did actually fight in WW2, don't get where all the hate is coming from?!

France held back English imperialism and expansion for hundreds of years. Waterloo (very close thing) and also 'WWII' in isolation didn't help, however that isolation without history is pointless opinion.

Hence 'don't trust the french' 'white flags' and 'they run away'.

There may be examples of french military failings, but every country has it.

It's called sour grapes. It is ingrained in English culture.

To be frank, its pathetic.

Anyway, I think this is a good idea. Its nice to see Britain finally wake up to the fact that it hasn't been a world power for 40 years.

Napoleon, for example, marched all over Europe, until he got a bit carried away in Russia.

I don't have a problem with it for say 5-10 years. But 50 !?!?! years seem utterly ridiculous.

I'm sure in 10-15 years we will be able to afford some planes for our carriers. Then we won't need the French anymore?

Why can't they just abort the scrapping of the Harriers? What exactly says we can't cancel that plan? My understanding is that £350mil is all that is needed to fund the Harriers for another 10 years. With all the big numbers we've hearing in past 2 years, £350mil doesn't seem that big anymore?

Why do we need to keep alone?

Exactly, there are countless examples.

This thread, and popular historic opinion round here quite frankly sucks.

Do we see everyone running around going 'ARF ARF ARF Germany squashed by Napolean, HAHAHA THOSE GERMANS!'.

OcUK, ******* grow up.

Exactly.

We can thank the English Channel and the Royal Air Force as the only bar to a Nazi invasion in 1940.

France, Belgium, Holland etc did not have that natural barrier and were powerless to stop the German military invading and some forget that many French people died assisting Britain during WWII.

In 10 years we might just about be getting round to buying some rolling stock for our pitiful trains. Perhaps we can stick the old carriages on the aircraft carrier?

That scene is the worst scene of any movie I have ever seen. I actually felt violated after watching it.

Tell me about it, I was willing to overlook the ridiculous feats in the rest of the film, but that particular scene crossed the line.

They wouldn'tve got past the Royal Navy. But that's another debate altogether;)
