Hey :)

Am looking into joining an independant union as we are not offered one at work.

I made a thread a few months ago regarding me and 2 other colleagues doing the exact same job, but there being a huge pay gap.

I have since had my appraisal, have been told i am the best member of staff they have, yet i cannot have a pay rise.

They also feel the fact that i am on approximatly (sp?) £7k LESS a year than one of my colleagues that there is no reason i should not do the same amount of work as him and should have the same responsibilites.

It has got to the point i am arguing with people who have nothing to do with work, purely because it is getting to me that much and am looking for a way to fix it.

Can anyone offer any advise as to a union i could use, i work in an office for a beer delivery copmany, all the drivers have their own union and seem to get pay rises everyyear, and pretty much anything they want...maybe not 100% true but it seems that if they kick up enough of a fuss they get things done, so i want to do the same as i feel like i am being used beyond belief.

Any advise or websites offering information would be brilliant, have looked at a few but would like to hear from possibly someone who has done something similar or or part of an out of work union:)
 
I don't mean to come across as trite but perhaps rather than hoping a union will solve your issues, you should be more proactive in asking for more on a justified basis rather than just saying you deserve more because x is paid more.

Alternatively if you're not happy maybe you should consider alternative employment.

I have been doing so for the past 6 months, and my line manager agrees that i at least deserve a pay rise, not necessarily to the levels of what the other 2 are on, but a payrise none the less, but it is above him, and the person who can make the decision seems to think me being on pretty much minimum wage is fine

Finding a job isnt that easy, have been applying for quite a while with no luck :(
 
I feel for you dude, the current economic situation is not helpful either. Even harder to convince the powers that be to pay more.

its just so annoying, the amount of extra work i have done, even taking work home to complete in hope of atleast a little recognition and not a bloody bean :(

Have a few job apps lined up, leaving just before christmas will make them realise how much they need me :p
 
It might be the case that they could to bring your pay up a bit though your colleague could also be slightly overpaid for his position too.

I don't see what use a union would be in this situation.

Also if you can't find a better paid job then you might have to re-asses your view that you're currently underpaid.
 
You may be looking for another one anyway if you push your luck.

Been there just over 2 years

The 1 thing that is annoying is the one guy who is on £7k more than me, was fired form the company for drink driving and hit a bridge and totalled the wagon...was re-hired the next day in the warehouse and is now in the office...on the same pay he was on whilst being a driver :/

It is also annoying that i have been training said individual ><

Always worth being in a union for other reasons besides the one issue you've already identified.

Get your other colleagues to join as well - you'll be stronger as a united group.
