Handbrakes and MOT's

Ah, cool... Seems odd though, what's the benefit?

Drums are more efficient than discs* - the reason why we mostly see discs these days is that discs are better at dissapating heat. This is not an issue in a handbrake setup.

*Except in the BMW handrakes, it seems.

The handbrake can't cause the discs to warp by retaining heat on just one part of the disc if the handbrake is a drum :)

Aah makes sense. Is it like a weeny drum inside the disc, or something behind it or what?

if its a top hat rear brake it will have dice and drum
disc for the foot brake
drum for the hand brake

manufacturers found it difficault to make a good caliper holding both cable and fluid

but i cant remember what they are on old bmw's

not true drums have a smaller braking force,

shoes push out against the drum, it is easier and gives greater force clamping which disc's do...

It is true.

Drums are fine.

Fox, it shouldn't need constant adjustment. Is it one drum for the handbrake, or two? If its one, that's probably the answer.

If not I'd be horrified driving such a large car with it accepted as being substandard by the manufacturer.

sorry mate yout wrong

jags where the first cars to have disc's fitted and they had to have warning sticker on the bumper to warn cars behide of sharp braking.

your right about heat but also think about, the size of pistons in calipers compared to wheel cylinders, think about the surface area of the compound. i you wanted a drum brake with the same force as a disc it would have to be about 4 times the size.

drum brakes are harder to work on, fade a lot faster and trap the dust

Disc brakes are rubbish for parking brakes as a hot disc will contract as it cools causing the brake to release slightly, in extreme cases this can result in you coming back to find your car at the bottom of the hill instead of where you parked it. Conversely as a drum brake cools the drum contracts onto the shoes making the brake come on even harder.
