I needses some new Sci Fi

Moon - highly recommended.
Star Trek (the new film) - not bad but not the best, I always preferred Star Wars for some reason.
District 9 - loved this one.
Avatar - loved this one even more.

Only recent film that has yet to be mentioned which springs to mind is Monsters.

Seems to be a bit of a love or hate film, but definately worth a try, I thought it was great.

Event Horizon
Pandorum
Sunshine (starts off good, loses something mid way through but still alright)

Seen them all :) Sunshine +was+ excellent until the end, which as you said spoiled it somewhat.

Event Horizon is great all the way through. It's one of those films that when it's playing on TV, I can't stop myself watching it :p

Let's open up the thread to anything from... 2000 ish onwards. Give or take a decade :p There must be something I missed ;)

Half way through watching Cargo on the recommendation of this thread, pretty good so far if not slightly slow.

Will update :)

Edit: Weeeeeeeeell... I finished watching it and it was, ok. It was a slow film with frankly not much going on for large periods of time, the whole thing could have been done in an hour rather than 2. Now pacing can be very important for sci-fi films, especially those set in space, and so sometimes a film can get away with, or be enhanced by, a very slow pacing (e.g 2001), however in this film it didn't really hold the attention and I kind of zoned out.
that being said, it's not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, and what with their being so few decent sci-fi films (especially space opera types) for fans of the genre, I definitely would recommend people give it a watch.

6.5/10

Dragging this back up. Anyone seen or heard any good/bad things about the 2 new sci-fi films coming out very soon (Skyline and Monsters)? - both look quite similar stories but using different methods - Skyline seems to focus on the action and the warzones but Monsters seems to be taking a more unseen horrors approach. Just going on what ive seen in previews though.

Cargo was disappointing.

Plus points:
A very fit German woman gets a lot of screen time.
The cargo ship had a very nice cargo bay.

Minus points:
Plot which makes no sense
Characters who behave in a very abnormal way
Not very sciency (no, a ship in space won't stop if you turn the engines off)
Copious plot holes and over-use of "lucky he/she/it was right there when needed!" moments (is there a name for that?).

Ugh, it really was a waste of 2 hours. Sorry guys.

Battlestar Galactica (2004).

Four seasons, a mini-series, two feature length thingys and some webisodes of AWESOMETASTICNESS.

just checking....but have you seen John Carpenter's "The Thing".

the new terminator film was ok. Not great but I thought worth watching

FAQ About Time travel was quite fun. I saw it on TV a few months ago. More of a comedy and it has Chris O'Dowd from the IT Crowd

what about "the island" or Equilibrium

then there's I Robot (not great but definitely worth watching)

aha Doom! Now that's a mindless sci-fi that is actually quite enjoyable as long as you're not too far up yourself.

Other thing I would recommend is game walkthroughs on youtube. The Bladerunner game is actually enjoyable just to watch.

Would strongly advise getting into tv series.... best scifi is there

otherwise scifi films are getting less and less sadly.

District 9 was my fav for this year...or last

Or check out scifi channel low budget releases if ya desperate lol

I know you said you didn't fancy tv shows. But Battlestar is just fantastic, better than any sci fi films. And it doesn't loose it anything as it goes along, in fact it gets better.

Give the 2 hour pilot a go (treat it like a film) and if you enjoy it, you have another 4 seasons to love ;)

+1 Battlestar Galatica - just Emmy award winning sci fi goodness

I'll have to give a shout to " The Abyss " another great film, sci fi element to it, its not space ships and robots but its got tons of atmos, tense, and diving action.

An American nuclear submarine is attacked (during the cold war) and crashes underwater. The navy asks the workers of a nearby underwater oil rig who are joined by a number of navy SEALS to locate and investigate the cause of the crash. As the crew embark on their mission, they encounter a number of difficulties and discover that they may not be alone. There is something else down there

Just re-subbed to LoveFilm, so bumping for any new suggestions :)

Saw Outlander (with Vikings) which was good, cheesy, fun. Don't expect too much and it's a good watch.

Inception is sitting on my desk waiting to be watched.

After countless recommendations, Battlestar Galactica is on my rental list :D

So what else do you guys recommend? I've seen most of the films so far in this thread now, and added the ones I haven't to my list, so I'm after new suggestions :)

For instance, a guy at work said Surrogates was a good one to watch. Mixed reviews, so I'm not 100% sure!? But for the price of a rental it's got to be pretty bad not to :p
