This may be sacrilege in this forum, but I am looking for an inexpensive set of speakers to connect to a TV that only offers a Digital Audio Optical output.

The speakers also require a headphone jack.

Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

Depends what you class as inexpensive.

Something like the 'CYP AU-D3' (Google it) would allow you to connect a digital source to existing speakers, but it's not cheap if you expected the whole lot to cost less than £40 to begin with :p

Thanks Phil99, that's useful.

Now the aim is to find a set of speakers (or a further splitter) that allow headphones and and speakers to run independently of one another (i.e. for one person to listen via headphones, and the rest to listen to the same channel via the speakers).

So much easier if every TV came with a dedicated headphone jack. Can't be that much of a materials saving to make it worthwhile leaving it out of a model?
