windows 97 - batch compress jpg?

Our networked workstations run on '97 (military pc's) and i have been given th eenvious task of compressing a load of jpg's. However, it is a slow, painful task and it doesn't help that the workstation is slower than the slowest thing you can think of.

The quickest (ha!) way i have found is to open a pic in paint and then click 'save' - this reduces the file size considerably and is quicker than going through picture manager>compress

However, is there a way to batch compress the pics through '97? (i cannot install any progs, nor can i upload the pics anywhere)

Thanks and fingers crossed.

copy them onto a memory stick, use picasa on an xp machine to compress them and copy them back?

or copy to cd and do the same?

Maybe you could create a batch file to open images in paint from one folder and save them to an output folder... Buts it's been so long since those dark days I don't even want to try and remember how one would go about it, sorry! ;)

cannot install any progs
cannot upload any pics
No USB connectivity

Must be something already installed with 98

Surely if you are on a military system and they are asking you to do this, could they not allow you to export the photo's for resizing or if sensitive allow you a better level of access? Do they not have IT bods who could assist?

Not even Windows 7 has a batch image compressor [that I am aware of], so a little optimistic to expect Windows 98 to have any such tool built in!

Just tell whoever is in charge you can't do what they ask without third party tools.

Do you have a CDROM drive you could boot from, cos you could then get a bootable Linux Live CD which should have a better array of image tools?

I know it's probably a pointless question but why do they want them compressing? And how many images are there?

I dont think you can really batch file paint as it only accepts a cmd switch of /p or /pt which just prints it. MS Document imaging offer a bit more but not sure if it's available on the system you are using (i would guess Office 97 on Win98?)

no CD, no USB, no uploading, no installing - my problem had to use something already installed with '98 that can batch compress a load of jpgs.

In the end i did them all one at a time using office viewer > compress

480 images

:(

But thanks for all the advice!
