anyone still on XP?

I like Windows 7, Vista was shocking. This pc has XP though which is a pain because i can't run Just Cause 2 on it :(

I don't think Win Vista was better then XP. But, win 7 is better but I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless you do a lot of Home streaming and want to use DX 11.

I'd keep Win XP for now.

Saw benchmarks a while ago online, Win7 64bit was a couple percent faster than WinXP 64 in a few games they benchmarked.

Windows XP is still a good O/S. If you don’t need 64bit support, running less then 4GB (well need more then 3GB useable) and have no need for DX10 /11 support, and thus need a DX10 /11 compatible card, then there isn’t any urgent need to upgrade XP to Windows 7 in the home.

But, Windows 7 is a very nice O/S depends on what you want to do. Windows 7 is a nice step up, its different to XP in many ways, too many to list but its up to you.

I upgraded to Windows 7 as I had a Dx11 card and needed 64bit support as I wanted to use the full 4GB and I also fancied a changed. I’d used XP since it was launched, upgraded to Windows 7 six months ago.

I think it was worth it, but that was me.

I know Windows XP is very near to EOL with MS. I think SP3 support was extended to March 2011, I can’t remember so patches and security fixes will soon cease but the good news is that an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 needed be too expensive. It’s the cost of a couple of games for Windows 7 64bit home edition. And you’ll use it every time you turn your PC on.

XP support continues until April 2014.

Many people who still use XP do so out of preference, not cost. (To be clear, if Windows 7 was free I would still use XP.)

Lot longer then I thought, goes to show how many are still using it. XP was, and is a really good O/S. I never really had much trouble with it..

Not keen on Windows 7 winsxs folder continually growing and I can't clean it up. All searches tell you to not mess with it. Mine is now at 6GB after just half a year of running Windows 7 - thankfully got a fairly large C: partition.

I was under the impression physical support still exists...but updates wont be continuing some time soon?

Well...i know they wont be shipping it out on systems anyway

My work one is 7.2gb apparently :p

What is it? Just updates stores or?

Patches will continue until 2014

On April 14, 2009, Windows XP and its family of operating systems were moved from Mainstream Support to the Extended Support phase as it marks the progression of the legacy operating system through the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy. During the Extended Support Phase, Microsoft will continue to provide security updates every month for Windows XP; however, free technical support, warranty claims and design changes are no longer being offered.

On April 8, 2014, all Windows XP support, including security updates and security-related hotfixes, will be terminated.[2]

I'll check, but I'm sure EOL of windows XP is very soon for updates, and companies can get extended support but for the home I'm sure its much sooner then 2014.

As for the winsxs is a hard link to ALL dlls etc on your system, and backups of patches etc... Its meant to be if a dll is lost or deleted its not gone you can recover etc... It has a large number of MSI and DLL files when I looked in it. You can get tools to check the contents etc. Space Sniffer will show you what the folder contains...

Its more then just this, google it. you honestly can't delete anything from it, I tried moving the files as a test. They move, but then when you try to install or change an application the O/S complains about MSI files missing... Annoying as hell. And it grows each time I boot up.

Yeah regular support ended a year ago, but I can confirm that MS are still doling out regular updates for XP as I am getting them at home.

Doesn't surprise me. I remember Windows 95 getting updates after mainstream support was pulled.

Windows XP is installed to so many home users, and still used in so many businesses that pulling support will not be easy for MS. I think this is why so much confusion. They want to get rid of XP, but they can't just yet.

Much like Windows 95/98. they wanted to get everyone to Windows 2000 but didn't work out like that...

Windows XP does have a lot of life yet. It'll be around for a good few more years yet...

Put it this way...all of our computers here in the school run XP...bar about 5 of them, which are all support systems etc.

And god knows how many that is :p couple of hundred or so?

And in my previous place it was a good 500
