Garage said a price...now wanting more?

Finding a decent garage is a pain in the ass, i used to take mine to a guy my dad had know for years, then he started ripping me off.
Got recommended a garage close to work, really good service, fairly cheap and now about another 6 people from my old job go there.

So if you live near Nelson in Lancashire, try Rigg street motors, they are excellent.

Sounds like garage blokey has lost his marbles a bit!

This.

If it was me I would ask him for a breakdown of the costs (with the necessary parts invoices if he has them). If £150 is reasonable for the parts and labour then I would pay the extra £30. I'd never use him again though as it sounds like he has a bit of an attitude problem and obviously doesn't know how to run a business properly. He should have given you a written quote at the beginning which would have avoided all of this.
I would also suggest in the future that you always get a written quote first, even if you trust the person.

As people have said pay the £30, it is a good price.

I had my cambelt and water pump recently done and it cost me £240 and that is knowing the owners well.

You do understand that different cars will cost different amounts to get a timing belt changed don't you? Just because your car cost you £240, doesn't mean that £150 is ridiculously cheap for the OP's.

I may have thought about paying the extra £30 if the guy hadnt been such a tit, but after all that he'd be getting the original price and nothing else

how do you know a pulley hadnt ended up seized on so hours were spent removing it in order not to break anything else and new bolts/fasteners used

dont you have any sympathy?

How do you know that happened? I think if the garage had explained that to the OP, he would have paid the extra, you're just making things up and assuming they happened.

Its pretty damn good for a clio to be honest (speaking from experience).

annoying things like that do happen and you can end up spending way too long on a job

is that bad luck for the mech in that someone brought a car in for a job that went wrong?

i had to change a coil pack once, car was misfiring badly. the coilpack was a few months old but the previous mech put it on way too tight, cracked the coil and it failed quickly

it should be a 5 min job but the buggered bolts wouldnt come out so took loads of faffying and time to source the odd sized bolts at short notice.

then what?

He's blatantly acting like a dick, just give him 120 or threaten to take it to cab

Oh no, not the CAB!

Sorry to pick on you for this KNiVES as you are not the only one but why is everyone on this forum so obsessed with the CAB as if they are some sort of superheros who can fix everything?

You don't take something to the CAB like they will fix it all for you, it's not like taking someone to small claims court. The clue's in the name, the A bit - they will offer you advise. Whether that is to go to court, ignore it, etc etc - just advise. If you go in threatening to "take it to CAB", you'll sound a bit silly.

Anyway, its one thing when a job ends up costing more because more work has become apparent and they call to let you know first, but this bloke sounds a bit mental - from your description anyway. What was his reason for 120 not being enough any more?

in the event where mechanical or technical issues are encountered which will raise the price above that quoted before acceptance of the work, the responsibility lies with the garage to phone the customer and explain the difficulties encountered and ask if the customer is willing to pay more.

you are not allowed to simply say "bugger the customer", do the work anyway and then charge extra for it.

when i worked at a shop doing mechanical work over the summer, if ever a job was encountered where it was significantly more complex/expensive than initially thought, we'd always phone the customer to enquire whether they'd accept the extra charges even though we never confirmed the price before accepting work.

Its either CAB or the unfair dismissal tribunal :)

could be worse, last garage that did a timing belt for me never bothered changing the bleeding thing :)

seems a good price though even at £150. just to give you an idea of how good i paid that for parts alone for my veccy belt and water pump. then around 3 hours of swearing at it.

assume £60 for the kit then 2 hours or so for the job seems decent

To be fair it does depend on the engine though. Big cars with small engines have loads of space and therefore makes the job easier.
But I have a big engine (relatively speaking) in a small car (Cliosport 172) which makes the job cost twice as much.

Mate, don't take no crap from the garage, you are the customer, you are paying them, they should respect your custom.

just find another garage, there are loads of local garages that can do a good job
