Spec me - OcUK Bundle

Hi, im looking to purchase a new overclocked bundle from OcUK.

I was looking at the: Krypton Intel Core i7 970 3.20GHz @ 4.00GHz Overclocked Bundle with the Corsair Hydro H70 CPU Cooler.

Is this bundle worth the price? I'm currently using an old dual core system, and looking to build a new gaming system that will run all the latest and upcoming games.

If so, could you please spec me any recommended power supplys and graphics cards I should look at for purchasing to use with this bundle?

Hardware needs to fit inside an Antec 300, although I could modify the case by removing hdd bays etc if need be.

I plan on using dual 24" monitors with this system at some point, but will only be gaming on the one monitor.

Hi stulid

Wow, I didn't notice that the CPU in the bundle I originally posted was 6 cores! I should have realised with the price of the bundle!

No I don’t, all I will be doing is playing the latest and upcoming games at the highest settings possible!

With the bundle you specced, which motherboard choice would you choose? As theres 2 more choices for upgrade.

If I go with that bundle, I could spend more money on other components such as the graphics card and purchase a soundcard etc.

you probably dont need a sound card either, the Intel HD audio thats on the motherboard is very good.

so you can spend more on your graphics card? well the new nvidia GTX580 is out on the 9th.

and the top end ATI 6950 and 6970 are out this month too.
 
Agree with Stulid though imo you could save even more and just get this one, for gaming i5 is as good as i7
Also imo a 470 is all you need really for gaming on a single 24", save the rest

A good way of saving money without sacrificing gaming experience. However at that point you are locked into single GPU configurations; not a big problem for most users and definitely not if you are going with a high end card such as the 470 OC'ed.

Anything you would change? I'm not sure whether to buy a SSD?

do you want that version of the psu with the blue led fan?

why not the cheaper GTX470 i linked too? or do just want one with the hardwork already done? which guessing from buying a pre-overclocked i7 bundle would be a yes then?

I will change back to the cheaper GTX470 card you linked me to, as £50 is a bit much for the same card just over clocked!

I was going to go with a blue lighting theme inside the case, but I may want to turn them off, so I will go with the non-led PSU.

Do the corsair PSU's have anything over the new Antec True power one I’m looking to buy?

Also, are SSD's a replacment for HDD's? Or is there a downside for using it as a main drive?

To be honest overclocking a GPU is a lot, and I do mean a lot, less work than overclocking a CPU. Personally, only having done it once and not having much experience working with BIOS in general, I found overclocking my GPU simple and not very laborious at all.

So I guess quite a lot of people would fall in my camp, where the small premium on the CPU OC bundles are definitely worth whereas I would not be as interested in pre-OC'ed as it were GPUs.
 
Only downside with a SSD for a main drive is the lower storage capacity, but the performance makes up for though :)

SSD's are used to run the OS and games from, its always a good idea to have say a 500gb hard drive for storage as well.
 
Ok great, as I have a Western Digital Green 500GB SATA 3.5 HDD in this current system which is no more than 2months old, so I could use that for storage.

Thanks for linking me to the reviews; I will definitely be sticking with the Antec PSU.

Do you have any recommendations for case fans? I’m currently on OcUK looking at the Yate Loons and Xigmatek fans. Every case fan I have had before are really loud so I don’t want to buy any fans without knowing about them lol.

Is there a PSU that is pretty much fully modular? Obviously apart from the 24pin connector etc.

The only downside I have found about the Antec one is it has so many hard wired cables it defeats the point of being a modular PSU?
