what is your biggest waste of money

According to my MyLastCigarette app i spent £27,362.97 on smokes during my 15 years as a smoker (age 18-33)

I reckon it was probably a bit less than this due to the number of bummed & cadged fags and ashtray-revivals during my student years.

Even so its a hellofa bunch of dough, The good news is that in the 264 days since my last cigarette i have 'saved' £1290 by not smoking

might just buy one of these at the weekend to celebrate :p

Most likely flights. Not that they're a waste, but they cost. Thousands. Since 2005 I've booked 87 flights with Lastminute and probably around 10 with individual airlines. I still have all the emails and costs and could add it up, but I'm scared :( . Most likely 35-40k. Some of those holidays I can't even remember :(

Cars
Computers - though not so much because I don't upgrade much at all now
I rented a house for 9 months, what an excellent use of £5K that was.

Cars mainly though
Purchase prices of my car history: -

£3300 - Student loan covered this
£7999 - I borrowed off my dad
£9999 - Borrowed off my dad again (though I'd paid off the first one)
£8999 - Again, borrowed off my dad (though paid back the last one)
£17000 - Bank loan is funding this one.

Nearly £50K of car over 7 years. Oh, then there's the insurance...

4-5K?

Oh and the mileage
I've done...160K since 2003... so Petrol/Diesel, **** must be ~£15-20K?

Christ.

Most my money goes on alcohol/going out so probably that.
Also spent a fair bit on clothes that I dont wear often/can no longer fit into.

I dont waste money anymore, probably clothes when I was younger (4-5 years ago), still have loads of top brands still unworn.

Wow in that time frame I spent £16k on 3 cars made back £7k in selling and current car is worth £3k so lost £6k in 7 years.

Although I've spent a fair bit on my girlfriend, I don't really see it as a waste of money per say. I mean, I've resisted the urge to buy a few really expensive things that I would have got if she weren't around, so I most likely would have used the money I spent on her anyway to buy said expensive items (mainly a new TV for my room and a new graphics card).

What definitely was a total waste of money, though, was a pair of tickets I bought a couple of weeks ago off 'the bay'.

I initially went on Ticket Master to order some tickets for Jimmy Carr's new tour. I decided I wouldn't get them at the time because I didn't know where my girlfriend would want to sit, so I left them. She then comes round mine for the weekend, but I completely forgot to order the tickets while she was here. The following Monday, I go back to Ticket Master and find that all tickets for the show had been sold (no matter what option I tried, I couldn't find any available tickets). With the knowledge that the show had seemingly sold out, I went on 'the bay' to try my luck. I found a seller who had 10 STALLS - ROW C (third back from the front) tickets for sale. Unfortunately, this would cost my twice as much as they were going for on Ticket Master, yet I bought two without hesitation.

Anyway, roll forward to this Wednesday just gone, and I go onto the venue's official site to see if they really had completely sold out. Although the seats weren't brilliant, they still had tickets available. Although a bit pee'd off, I wasn't completely gutted because the tickets I had bought, albeit twice the price, were vastly superior to the "best available" that I found on the venue's website. The only thing that really annoyed me, though, was that the website was selling them with Ticket Master, so I don't really get why Ticket Master themselves didn't have any more for sale.

Just a simple case of Sod's law, really. At least I know to double-check next time.

i think you win :)

Countless cinema trip's, absolute waste of money, even more so when the film is utter garbage.

It all adds up :(

not all money waste is you liked some of the films :) fair enough for the ones you didn't like

It is, considering the ridiculously over-priced beverages and tickets, when the films come out a short period later on DVD, or available to download on-line

OK so I've just done all the math, taking into account part ex prices, therefore the cash I have parted with...

£29K

£4K a year average

OK I need to stop buying cars.

I think people are missing the point of the thread, how is this 4k wasted exactly do you get no use from the cars, or zero enjoyment?

If this is not the case then the money is used if not wisely but at least for something that benfits you a great deal, now if you truly think it was wasted you should sell your current car and not buy another one.

Hey, could you ask your dad if he'll loan me 10k please? :D

My MBA.

Did nothing to further my career and opened no doors. :(

Really, how did you manage that?

It's done me an extraordinary amount of good and continues to do so (now 12 years after doing it). Just putting the little woman through one too.

My most stupid computer waste of money was trisli 8800gtx - although it was at the end of their lifecyle so none were anything like full price (and I was able to play Crysis on max.....until the final scene).

Actually

You raise a very good point. I love my cars, but was never happy with smaller cars. The insurance on big cars for a youngster makes them totally prohibitive, but now I'm a bit older (27) insurance on a Group 14 car (my current one) is £450 a year.

Lovely :)

But no, I love driving - so actually, none of it was a waste.
