Be.... Visible

I've also noticed a huge increase in the amount of cyclists listening to IPODS/generic MP3 players.

I used to do this on my BMX a few years back. Never thought anything about it.
Tried it recently and thought to myself "you ******* idiot!"

Completely removing 1 of the senses you require when cycling on the road... Ridiculous.

what attitude, I dont follow you, the attitude that motorists should accept that there are cycles on the road?

I was referring more to the part where you vandalise a persons car after an accident, out of spite, and then find it amusing that a defenceless woman can't ring your neck or trace you because you have no number plate.

You say there a lot less idiots on bikes than there are in cars, I would hazard a guess and say that's because there are a lot more motorists. You would probably get a very similar figure if you worked it out as a percentage.

There are certain facts of life, one of them being that you will fare far far worse in a accident with a car, and yes, people will not be paying 100% attention 100% if the time, that goes for any vehicle - that's another fact if life. All road users have to come to terms with this, regardless of their mode of transport, and no matter how much you wine about it, it won't change, and as a cyclist you stand to lose a lot more than a dented bonet.

whats having a car parked on top of my head got to do with scratching somebodys bonnet after they nearly caused me some serious damage and then didnt even care how i was, just the state of her bonnet?

percentages have nothing to do with the amount of idiots of each on the road at any given time
wasnt whineing either, just stating a fact
car drivers are always full of bravado about how they will be fine and a cyclist stands to lose their life in an accident between the two, regardless of wether it was the drivers fault or not, id like to see any driver come to terms with the fact that they caused the death of an innocent cyclist and then have to get behind the wheel of a car again and deal with that fact for the rest of their life

so, to summarize, yes, cyclists be very visible, but drivers, be aware, and not so reckless and always in a hurry, you could end up in prison

This is a very assuming and generalised comment. It's also wrong. I've made it more appropriate for you though:

a small percentage of car drivers are always full of bravado about how they will be fine and a cyclist stands to lose their life in an accident between the two, regardless of wether it was the drivers fault or not, id like to see any one of this relatively small number of drivers come to terms with the fact that they caused the death of an innocent cyclist and then have to get behind the wheel of a car again and deal with that fact for the rest of their life

That's better.

Simple, put some officers wasting their time with their radar guns in the evening, on fining cyclists without a light instead.

Oh an increase fines for cycling without lights to at least 100 quid... Not sure how it is in the UK but here they're laughable, 15€ for missing 1 light 25€ for missing both lights, imho it should be 100 for missing one and 150 or so for missing both the front and the back.

Oh noes!!!! As long as they use their eyes and are visible I don't really see the issue, what's the difference from drivers blasting their music nice n loud ? Deaf people are allowed to drive and cycle too...

Anyhow, do the normal thing and pay buy a led light set for a bike for 1 or 2 quid ( at least you won't look funny like with a high vis jacket, only people I see wearing those are road workers or cops)...
Them universal led lights cost 1-2 quid and need 2 aaa batteries per month if you ride 5x per week for 2 hours, they last AGES.

There's a little difference. As a cyclist you rely more on your sense of hearing for traffic awareness, pretty much all bikes don't have rear / wing mirrors :).

If your blasting out music in your car your generally a numpty with the window wound down and elbow and forearm resting on top in an attempt to look cool.
If your on a bike with music taking up most of your hearing capability your a dumb ass.

I'm a keen cycler, love the stuff usually I am very dam careful over myself - I don't run red lights, etc - my new bike can pick up real fast speed, it's a Specialized Allz £600 - silly me, yesterday I left my helmet and hi viz at home - even though it was 2 miles I should gear up. I entered a roundabout and was doing a right turn and a car joined too but never saw me and bang, he hit me.

I take some of the blame as although I have fairly decent bike lights (cateye ones - quite bright) I was not fully protected with hi viz and I could even of died.

However, it turns out the guy was using a mobile phone and was distracted and never concentrated properly - so I guess I might not of been hit if it was for him using a mobile phone but on the other hand I might of been seen with hi viz. He accepted full blame and offered to pay repair costs.

I think all cyclists should seriously sit down and think about thier safety when riding - I myself have learnt a lesson. Lucky I was okay. I might get a second rear light on the pannier too.
