Religion - I can understand someone believing in god/jesus, but why do they believe in the bible?

My wife’s side of the family are Christians (Church of Scotland)

Church going seems to be more of a means to prove ones social status these days, at least from what I have observed. I have been to church quite allot since meeting my wife (Sunday service, Christmas, church wedding, son was christened there etc)
The regulars seem to be middle to older age and incredibly ignorant and frankly unpleasant people. The minister is a really nice person though, and very relaxed about things. She has a sense of humour that comes through during the services so perhaps that breath of fresh air is what keeps me going back. I have also noticed more younger people and children attending recently.
I have had several discussions with my mother in law on the subject of Religion and the bible and I would be as well banging my head against a wall.
Everything from the bible is taken so literally it's unbelievable....the fact that I try to say that religion is very personal and I have my own interpretation of things (no I don't think Jesus died and came back, I think he was just "a guy", there is no invisible man in heaven waiting to smite non believers etc)
falls on deaf ears. I am wrong and thats the end of it ;)

Look at Jesus teachings in the Bible and you will find truths about a way of living together with your fellow man. People believe in the Bible because it holds some very good advice for building better communities and relationships with people.

As to the factual content in a historical perspective, no it's probably not very accurate but if you looking for historical accuracy your kind of missing the point.

Never watched a film with a messages or significance?

Before I get jumped on I'm a Pantheist not a Christian.

Why when we grow up do we accept that Santa/Tooth Fairy/Easter Bunny is not real, but we still hold firm the belief in God/Jesus?

Err because you eventually find the answer to how the presents, chocolate eggs and money really arrives.

Nobody has explained how the universe and consciousness has arisen yet.

Oh goody, a thread about religion! We haven't had one of those for at least 5 minutes!

Answers, insults, opinions to be the same as ever. Views not expected to change. Bans possible.

Good question by the OP. Different Christians believe quite different things about the bible so it can be hard to pin down. Some actually have an excellent understanding of what it is and how it came to be. Plenty of Christians do simply accept it on trust because of the way they've been brought up though.

Of central importance to belief in the bible is the idea that God loves us and wishes to reveal himself to us. Going beyond revelation, there is also the idea that God has worked in and through human history.

Although Christians recognise that the bible is a human work, they think that God was intimately involved in its its writing and compilation. The phrase "God breathed" is one found in 2 Timothy (a New Testament letter) describing they way that scripture is inspired. It is produced by a synergistic process between God and people.

I have plenty more detail to add, particularly on objective reliability and the way the bible was compiled, but little time just now. The subject needs a book not a forum post really.

At the end of the day if it does not affect other people then what's the problem.

It does though doesnt it, religion has effected the world for thousands of years? People believing in scripture.

I'm going to the gym in half an hour, and my friend Craig who I'll see at the gym is a Christian and he talks to me about his religion all the time and he said to me that, and I quote his words, not mine..."nobody has caused more murder and heart ache to mankind then Christianity over thousands of years"

So that's why I have this question, why do people believe in bible when its written by man.

Christianity doesn't cause murder and mayhem, people do. That people will use religion as a justification for their own human ambition is not surprising, but then ambition will use any ideology to further its own aims.

"nothing has caused more murder and heartache to mankind than Human Ambition over thousands of years" is more accurate.

LOL, another is there or is there not a god thread, in simple words 'no there isn't.

That's why more and more scholars these days are thinking of Jesus
in mythical terms. The birth stories are clearly legendary and borrowed from other ancient god-man tales. There is nothing about his childhood in the New Testament gospels except for one incident where his parents "accidentally" leave him behind and then find him "teaching" the elders in the temple - which again, is clearly legendary.

Is not one of the main beliefs of Christians that Jesus was the son of god and
after he was killed he was' risen from the dead'

What if the theories that Jesus did not 'rise from the dead' are true because he wasn't dead in the first place and his disappearance was due to him being carried off where he was nursed back to health and lived the rest of his life in hiding.
What if any evidence of this has been kept hidden ?
Why have some of the dead sea scrolls seemingly gone missing?
Why has the Catholic church kept a stranglehold on the other scrolls for over 40 years and refused access to all but a selected few.
