Thanks again guys for all the input to this thread. Gonna sleep on it but I'm still leaning towards the Gb 470 SOC and an SSD.

SSD is for your OS, I load games from a fast 1TB HD, 64GB drive is all you need to see a massive improvement in responsiveness in windows or any other OS.
Easy is typing his post through red tinted shades, he misses the fact that 470 SOC runs a lot cooler than a reference 470, it actually uses less power even with the overclock, is practicly silent under full load and seeing as it does come pre-clocked it will easily out perfrom the 6870, clock it to 480 speeds and the 6870 has no chance even when clocked itself.
Do I need the power of the 6970 or can I get by on the 470\6870 AND have the extra benefit of an SSD.
lol read what the OP actually requires help with.
An overclocked 470 is more than enough, hell there aren't that many games out there that can push a 460 never mind a 470. From all accounts a 6970 is going to be over 300 notes and perform slightly better than a 480/580, considering the SOC 470 can do 480 speeds, that and an SSD is a good choice and more than enough to power through the latest games.

100% get an SSD for your OS for me it's the best single upgrade I have ever done.. Wait for 6950/70 pricing and performance figures, it's the wise thing to do. If they fail then a 470/6870 would be a good choice with an SSD on top, it's not as if there are many titles that even push a 460.
That man knows good advice when he sees it.
Oh yeah
End of
Steady guys, Raven does take some stick on this forum and yeah he is very enthusiastic about his 480 and NV in general and I can remember when he was equally enthusiastic about Ati. But he's right about what I'm looking for and whilst it was my intentions to wait for the 6970\6950\580 it has become abundantly clear to me from the info i have gleaned from this forum and other sources that i would be more than adequately served by a 6870\470\460 and further benifit from having spare cash for an SSD. My next upgrade after this will be next August 2011, when, if necessary, I can upgrade graphics. I'm off out now so i wont be able to respond to any comments until later today.![]()
Ok guys, a wee update, couldn't resist the today only offer on the Msi 470GTX. Best bang for buck, in my opinion, just now. Spent a lot of time looking at various cards today and lots of reviews and decided this price was too good over the Gigabyte 470GTX SOC and the Sapphire 6870, which is £25 too much in my opinion. Now the search begins for an SSD for around £130 max. Thanks to all who contributed to the thread.![]()
The question is, why didn't he get two 470's then, and why isn't he spouting that SLI is the greatest, yet feel's free to recommend it? (Motherboard not compatible a possibility?)
As far as I see.. he has always recommended the fastest single card you can afford from his experiences, so I don't know why he isnt' recommending it now?
Raven> What improvements did you notice with an SSD? Was it just general responsiveness, and load times of everything in the OS were vastly improved? (I've always wanted one, just they have always worried me with longevity and price to try out).
