I use MPC Home cinema and its not staying as default playback device for videos, winamp is. How can I get it to stay as default once I've set it?

I had the same problem , winamp just kept nicking my associations
even tho I told it not to play ANY video files

I just uninstalled winamp and used foorbar2000 (winamp is utter gash compared to it)
BUT I had to trawl thru the registry any way and delete any references to winamp to completely fix it

Thanks for nothing winamp :(

Remove the video file associations from Winamp's settings.

And do this:

Options > Preferences... > File Types > Uncheck 'Restore file associations at Winamp start-up'

I had this problem too, however I don't use Winamp. If I told MPC to take control of certain audio types, it would forget its video associations. Then I'd redo the video associations and it'd forget the audio! I only wanted MPC to be the default player for .flac but I just couldn't get it to stick. In the end the only remedy was to click the "All" button so MPC takes responsibility for every extension it lists, as well as optical drives :(

edit: MPC build 1.4.2667.0

It is most likely 'Winamp Agent' that keeps restoring the associations.

There's an option to turn it off somewhere.

You guys need to learn how to install WinAMP/other apps using custom install instead of default install :p

Personally I NEVER use default installs

I never installed the winamp agent when I had it installed , still buggered me about tho

Better advice would be not to EVER install winamp cos is sooooooooo gash

WinAMP itself is in no way gash, I've been using it ever since it was in Version 2 and have also been a user of Foobar and have never had a WinAMP problem. WinAMP Agent has never installed itself either nor has it taken over associations.
