Is Diesel Inferior?

Like a diesel?

Only at very light loads but then you try to cover the infrequent large demand with electric motor assist. Just like IMA. With drive by wire this also means the traction drive demanded by the driver can be much better managed to maximise powertrain efficiency. The mechanical throttle on mine for example is a compromise as any extra grunt demanded by me will always result in the throttle opening rather than leaving its pegged in lean burn and just using electric assist to maintain speed on gradients etc.

Plan there is that you dont need to many extra bits for forced induction assist.

SEMA CR-Z Concept, I know what the predictable response will be to that but all cars start out as a concept and hopefully that is what will happen

That was the demo car from HPD, essentially a race arm of Honda who will use that spec car in a race event. It was then 'road styled' in typical SEMA style as essentially all the work could be used in the PR side and form part of the SEMA 11 tuner CRZ onslaught. The battery technology in that car for example is not appropriate for a production road car.

You dont need to tell me about concept cars not turning into reality.... oh wait Land Rover LRX > Range Rover Evoque

This year I changed from a 1.8L petrol to a 1.9L TD, so far it's saved me £600 ish in fuel costs :)

Neither engine got me excited, after all it's just a family taxi / commuter mobile ......

I changed from 1.3L petrol, to a 2.5L turbo petrol, it's saved me -£600 in fuel costs :) and it's worth every penny, lol.

Petrol and turbo'd petrol is the future for me.

Several people I know have brought diesels purely for cheaper tuning, ie would rather have the 1.9pd audi a3 instead of the 1.8t as the derv can be tuned well for much less.

'why did you buy the diesel?'
'so I can chip it.'

Doesnt make sense, the petrol variants remap with higher outputs surely, in fact most of them higher power as standard

I think your mates just want say "remapped innit"

Sums up everything thats wrong with some diesel owners.

'YEA MATE GOT IT CHIPPED'.

The 1.8T remaps as well. And ends up considerably faster.

I DO HOPE THEY DIDN'T DO THAT!

If LPG was going to take off it surely would have by now

Well its becoming more popular all the time, remember unleaded petrol didn't take over in one night. Also LPG has the advantage of being used in homes/schools/commercial property's so its already a widely used standardized fuel source, its just taking time to catch on for cars in this country. At the end of the day it is cheaper per mile than Diesel/petrol and you pay less for tax as its a lot more environmentally friendly so hopefully the government will introduce grants towards conversions or something like they have done for the property versions.

in short, to answer your question, is diesel inferior. The answer is no. Is it superior, No. Is petrol superior, no. Is petrol inferior, no.

It entirely depends on the application. I chose a disel for a number of reasons.

I liked the way it drove, effortless overtaking without having to drop down 1 or 2 gears. The fact that on proper long runs, you can achieve 700miles to a tank.

However, does that mean I'm a diesel fanboy? No, my next 5 will be a petrol, because I'm not doing stupid mileage anymore.

Oh, and my gearstick has never rattled. Probably because it's not attached to the gearbox!

I thought they did introduce grants? As far as I know its still in effect and its a bit of a flop, i'm just guessing its a flop, I have no contact with LPG what so ever I wouldnt even know where to get it and i'd imagine most typical car owners are the same
