Anyone been to LA ?

I went to LA in September.

You'll easily get a better deal on your flights, I paid £470 return.

LA itself is dissapointing. Like you I was excited to see LA. After 1 day there, I realised that once you've ticked the boxes, its pretty rubbish.

Happily, though, there are so many great places to visit around LA.

San Diego, Las Vegas, Pacific Coast Highway, San Francisco, etc etc. All within driving distance.

Fly into LA. See it for a day. Then go to better places.

And you'll be in agony in a Virgin Atlantic economy seat - I only just fit and I am not as tall as you.

It is not, however, a cheap destination. You will spend a considerable amount of money staying there for a month or more. There isn't quite the backpacking scene you'll find in somewhere like Australia. And relying on kipping over in girls houses is a bit weird :p

If you want to do the after uni random roaming thing with cheap hostels, Australia might be better for you.

Have you ever been?

Obviously not. Or if so then you've been to all the wrong places.

LA is huge and I mean absolutely huge.. I've had the privilege of seeing most of it. From Beverley Hills, to riding up into the local mountain ranges Angleas Crest and Santa Monica Mountains then down Malibu Beach, Santa Monica Pier. Downtown etc. I had an awesome time. Can't wait to go back...

Yes avoid East LA, but other than that enjoy...

Remember it is a city though and you can get yourself into trouble.. but no more than say London.

I have been to LA, in fact I lived there for several years as teenager and again for a couple of years as an Adult and I would concur with Freefaller.

LA is a dump.

Agreed entirely. Good post and advice. :)

Immigration will be a problem as well, the Yanks don't like people turning up without any real plan and without a return ticket.

The Aussies dont tend to mind so much.

Fly into LA and stay a night. Then hire a car and gtfo and only come back to LA the day before your return...

Thats enough time in LA really...

ps3ud0

Do not buy a one-way ticket unless you like throwing money away.
There's some good stuff to do and see in LA, but it's really not a very nice place at all.

California, on the other hand, is fantastic and you need to do Highway 1, along with San Francisco and some other stuff which I'm sure others will talk about :p

No return ticket and he isn't getting in at the moment.

Yes, and not just atm. It has always been a requirment of the VWP to have a flight booked OUT of North America within 90 days of arrival. Doesn't need to be back to the same destination, as long as it is with a recognised carrier and is flying to a non-adjacent country. So you can't book a flight to Canada or Mexico (unless obviously you have a flight that leaves Canada/Mexico within 90 days of your arrival into the US)

Oh also return tickets are often cheaper than one-ways tickets - when I needed to fly out for my immigration visit I wanted a one-way ticket and it was 800-900 quid, so booked a return for 450 instead :p

I don't know how you can say something as broad as 'LA is a dump' as plainly it isn't, there are as many exceptions, Santa Monica, Malibu, pretty much anywhere along the coast bar Long Beach, there are 'dump-like' places. It's a strange place certainly, the large boulevards running throughout the city take some getting used to.

There are some great little communities in LA just like in any other major city, they're just a bit harder to find and if you're a tourist spending a few days passing through then unless you happen to know someone who knows those places then you'll likely never find them either. :p

Given it's 7-8 months away why don't you do something awesome like plan towards cycling from San Francisco to San Diego? It costs $10 a night to stay in the State Parks with a tent and it would be an amazing experience which would no doubt land you buckets of chicks when you arrive in the built-up areas :p

LA's a dump.

We did the whole Highway 1 thing over three weeks. Flew into San Francisco (having been in NYC a few days) and then had hotels booked all the way down to Los Angeles where we flew home.
Compared with the rest of the visit, LA truly & simply is a dump. We stayed there for no other reason than to fly home.

Seriously, do all the rest of Cali as it's great, just give LA a miss.

I agree with everything you just said, apart from the camping.. Not for me :D

Word of warning, some carriers charge you if you do not take the return flight, don't know who, but i remember being given this warning when i booked a one way trip... Didn't hear back mind.. But even so i thought I'd mention it.. Besides for the OP, he'll just be able to stay for 90days and he'll need a return since he won't have the visa in his passport saying otherwise.

Lol, he's right. LA is probably the most populated city I've ever been to, it makes London look green, you can see the smug and grey everywhere.

It might be what you like of a city but most people would probably not appreciate that "beauty", go to Vancouver if you want to see a big beautiful city.
