Custom GTX 470 cooler driving me nuts!

Having just spent the better part of an hour getting this thing attached, I switch it on and the damn noise is louder than the stock cooler (at idle)!

I see that the people who make it (GELID) set the default RPM at 2,000. Having done a bit of research online it seems that you can reduce this to 1,500 without too much heat increase. Right now GPU-Z says my temp is 28c, so I should have some room to play with.

Problem is no matter what I do I can't find a way to reduce my RPM speed. I've tried various software apps, I'm even using the 3 pin power adapter so the fans are registered on the motherboard. I can see the RPM when I go into the BIOS, but it won't let me change it.

You will need to connect the fan to a fanmate or to an appropriate fan header on your mobo and use speed fan to adjust the speed, you can't adjust the speed with software when the fan is connected to the cards fan header.
 
To set it from the BIOS depends on the BIOS having a controller and options for it for the aux header. If its a gigabyte board you might need to press control+F1 in the main screen of the BIOS to unlock the advanced options.

EDIT: As Raven said make sure your using one of the fan headers on the motherboard - one thats controlable from the BIOS - sometimes none are sometimes only the system and aux headers.

That's what I'm saying though, I have already disconnected the fan cable from the graphics card and it's now going through a 3 pin adapter onto the motherboard (PWR_FAN)
 
The only fan headers on my rampage 2 that are controllable " through speedfan " are channel fan headers..

If you can't get it to wrk through the mobo, your best bet is what Rroff suggested you buy or a fanmate 2

You will need to connect it to a fan controller and use the fan adaptor lead that Geild supply with the kit,that way you can control the fan speed.

Im currently have mine running at 1680 rpm and even at 2000rpm its still quieter than the stock 480 fan i have
 
Okay so it's fixed!

I did the fan controller thing as luckily one was included with the Zalman custom cooler that I got for my 480. Feel as though GELID are a bit cheap not including one, but whatever it's working now and no longer sounds like a hoover
 
As far as numbers I have the RPM set at 1200 (anything over that and it sounds louder than the stock cooler at idle). According to GPU-Z current temp is around 35c.

I guess I'll see what the temp rises to whilst playing a session of SC2. What would you guys say a safe max temp is? Around 70 or 80?
 
Run MSI afterburner, go in to settings>monitoring> then enable GPU temperature monitoring>now enable show in on-screen display.
 
I'll try the MSI prog for sure, but I'm very impressed if these GPU-Z readings are correct. I clicked to max and it shows 48.8, which is after playing a full on game of SC2 (everything maxed out). Hopefully MSI will show the same
 
That Gelid is a total PIA to fit but the temps are incredible as is the lack of noise. My GTX480 is 100% silent at all times & the temps are much better than stock even after heavy gaming :eek:

Just totally demonstrates that the stock HSF is a liability as now my card does not get hot at all to touch. Before if you touched it after a few mins it would seriously burn you :(
 
I have heard these coolers are hard to fit but can anyone who has done it elaborate for me? Tempted to get one but if it really is that risky fitting them I won't bother.

Also, reading this thread , I take it you can't use MSI for the fan profiles anymore as they can't be powered directly via the graphics card?

Its not risky at all unless your stupid and thread the screws holding the existing HSF on! Fan profile are not required either you manually control the dual fans instead via your motherboard 3 pin headers & a Zalman Fanmate.

They just take time to fit. Mine took about 2.5 hours as I was very careful but it could be done in 1.5 hours or slightly less all depends on how careful you want to be I took my time on everything & am well pleased as now its 100% silent at all times & temps are still 20C better than stock HSF so its well worth doing. You need to buy a Zalman Fanmate or other controller to take the fans RPM down to around 1200RPM as thats still silent. The dual fans get quite noisy around 2000RPM but even then they are much quieter than stock HSF @ full speed ;)
