Just wondered if there's a large range between the cards which can overclock greatly and those which cant?

I only want to pay as close to 200 as possible, but there any really good 470 cards for overclocking?

the msi's imo mate. just got mine under water and appears to be stable at 850mhz now.
they're £200 too:)

Todays Special MSI GTX 470 > £187.99, l'm using one at 800/1600/2000 1.OOOmv cracking bit of kit.

3t39 > nice one m8.

Just go for the cheapest. No way is the Gigabyte Super OC worth £55 more than a reference card. Overclocking is determined more by the GPU than cooling, and GPU choice is random luck.

^^^^
As above go for the cheapest. If you have to buy a decent cooler and install.
Above 220£ 470 gtx aint worth it as it goes into 5870 range with gives it a good spanking.

there is something different about that Gigabyte though ? according to reviews, it uses lesss power than Stock 470, and VIDs seemed to be very low ?

its a non stock design, has fancy power supply management etc

Normally I'd agree but the SoC are worth a bit over the regular cards, they run cooler, quieter, use less power (upto 19% depending on scenario) and are generally good overclockers. (Bare in mind in power useage tests they are running an OC'd card in comparison to the stock 470 - ramp the stock 470 upto the same clocks and it will use considerably more power than the SoC at the same clocks - same for the cooling at the same clocks its considerably quieter and cooler than the reference design).

Thanks for all the replies fellas.

I'm not too worried about power consumption, more performance and ability to overclock.

So whats the consensus, is the Gigabyte OC better?

or

should i get a very cheap 470 and buy a custom cooler?

I managed to use MSI's overclocking software to set my fan speed to 100% and get an extra 120MHz from my GT 220 (now 740MHz), so i'll probably use that tactic on the 470 i buy as well.

I dont know.

On a personal level this card look good to me: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-066-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1810

At its current speeds it eaqual too or better than a stock 5870.

Plus it comes with after market cooling enabling even better overclocking (quieter as well) than the MSI.

I think its up to the op, save money and go for the MSI but then have the disadvanage of not as good cooling and more noise plus possibly not as high overclock, or go with the pre overclocked card, already at 5870 speeds, already got very effective and quiet cooling.

I would get the Gigabyte.
