Need a way to motivate myself to lose weight

Hey guys,

I am a 22 year old student, and weigh around 78ish kilos (12 stone). Given that I am only 162cm tall (5' 4"), this is far too much, and I don't feel like I have a lot of energy etc. I used to be very fit, as I used to swim until I was around 16, when I developed a serious back and shoulder injury. I lost a lot of fitness, as I wasn't able to do any real exercise for about 12-18 months. After going to university, I lost even more fitness, and started to put on weight. I was to weigh around 65-70 kilos, which is what I feel is a good target weight for someone my size.

I am looking for good ways to motivate myself into getting to the gym more, and also get out on my bike more when the weather is decent (living in Glasgow, the winter weather is pretty damn miserable).

Can anyone recommend any good work out tips (I am aiming to do lots of cardio to lose weight, and build up my base fitness, and then work on building my muscles back up). I also need ways to motivate myself to eat healthily. I don't want to really cut anything out of my diet, as I find that a lot harder, and I also live with my girlfriend so I want to keep what we eat simple, but the same, but healthy.

Any advice would be great, from tips to good exercise music or meal plans. I am planning on getting back to the gym next week, so I need to make sure that I stick to this!

Sorry for the muddled post, and please feel free to ask any questions.

just go.

once you have got there a couple of times it will become normal. there is nobody here who can motivate you, you need to get out of your door.

Take a picture of your body, if you're not happy, change.

Also you at glasgow uni?

Theres some fine talent in the uni gym, that should be motivation enough.

Yeah, I am indeed at Glasgow uni :p

girls are much better at dieting. tell her she's fat and you'll diet too to help her. Then she'll make you stick to it.

That would be a good way for me to get a massive slap :p Lol.

first of all you state that you don't want to cut anything from your diet. then you want some meal plans and you want to eat healthy?

seriously read the sticky then the gym rats thread because its clear you don't have a clue about what you want or how to achieve it.

if you need motivation to lose weight, stick a picture of yourself topless on the fridge and one of the physique you want beside it.

Well, thanks for that.

When I say I don't want to cut anything from my diet, I mean, I don't want to avoid certain food groups. Obviously I will need to cut down on certain things, like eating less cakes etc, but I don't want to restrict myself to never eating certain foods again. I want to take the whole thing in moderation.

I do have a clue about what to do, I managed to lose 10 kilos last summer, then cracked my ribs, and then managed to put all the weight back on through sheer laziness and bad eating. Since then, I have found it hard again to motivate myself again, even though I know I can do it.

There is no need to assume that I have no idea what to do, simply because I said I didn't want to totally cut foods from my diet. I know what I want, I want to get fit, lose weight, and have more energy, but I am finding it hard to motivate myself again.

so what is stopping you? you have everything you need, a goal and knowledge of what it is like to be 10kg lighter and fitter.

trust me, you need to just go.

self pity.

stop feeling sorry for yourself, nobody is going to do it for you. as morba says just get cracking.

i only have a cake once a week or once every 2 weeks. a chocolate once a month and crisps maybe once every 6 months. put it this way for every cake you eat you will need to do an hour longer on the treadmill, swimming pool, skipping, etc. so if you eat a cake every 2 days, that's 3 hours extra per week on top of what you need to be doing. is it really worth it, for all that extra pain? just try and cut out as much junk as you can.

its 90% about the food and 10% about the exercise.

I will definitely be cutting out what I can, and not going mad eating cakes, crisps etc. But I just don't want to cut them completely, as I know from experience, that it makes things worse for me :p

It wasn't meant as a self pity post, I was just wanted to explain that I do know what I need to do, I just sometimes find the motivation hard, I'm sure I can't be the only one who finds it hard sometimes.

if you find motivation hard, that means you dont want it bad enough.

its the same with money, if you want to be rich, go out their and make your own luck and opportunities.

if you arent motivated enough by looking at yourself topless in the mirror then you simply dont want it bad enough.

you need willpower and motivation in this game, these can only come from yourself, nobody else. you can lead a horse to water.....

Fair enough, you do make a good point :p

I guess I do just need to work harder at motivating myself then

caley uni also has a gym which is open to everyone including other uni students. they might be cheaper/better so take a look in there.

otherwise skipping or running will be the cheapest forms of cardio available.

like i said though its 90% about the food though and only 10% about the training. you can train as hard as you want, but a mc donalds or a kebab will set you back weeks, thats not an exaggeration. they have enough calories in 1 meal to fill your daily intake or maybe even 2 days intake.

Haha yeah. I do try and cut down on that. I definitely need to take a look at my overall food intake, but it hasn't been too bad recently.

Going to sort out my gym membership next week, as I was going out on my bike until a week or so ago.

I had the same problems with a lack of energy etc. Although my diet has always been pretty good.

4 weeks ago I joined the gym (having been away for some time), I got myself on a diet and the results have been outstanding...

In 4 weeks I have lost half a stone. I have doubled the weights I was lifting (Struggled benching 40 kilo's my first week and yesterday I decline benched 90 kilos, so Im really pleased with how its going). Within 4 weeks I am about half a stone lighter, feeling a lot stronger and due to my 20 mins of running after each weight training session, my cardio has also improved. I'm managing around 3.5 km in 20 minutes every day... pushing for 4km ;)

Im doing the Max OT training on a 6 day split, and my diet is strict. I eat about 1650 -1900 calories a day, and due to a low glycemic high protein and good carb diet, I don't feel hungry.

When I started I was 83.9 kilos... now 81.9.. I want 76 kilos

I had my body fat measured the other day @ 13 Percent. my goal is to hit 8 percent... and there it is.

Get to the gym, get on a diet, get a plan and execute it... Once you make the commitment to improve yourself, the battle is 50 percent won, you then just have to complete the tasks you set for yourself, make them realistic and achievable and you will do it....

..tell us what you want to do and report back here within a few weeks and tell us how you get on...

For me:
I will be running 5km everyday within a month.
I will be 10 percent body fat in 3 months.
I will make steady improvements in the gym

Couple of things I find help for motivation:
Training with someone else, it helps to have someone to push you on when you can't be bothered.

Also, bit random but I find watching action films helps, bourne / rocky something like that makes me want to go for a run!
