You guys were great helping me out with my £1,000 eletric bill, so I figured this was worth a shot :D

I've just rented a new house and there seems to be this rather odd smell throughout. The best way I can describe it is paint, faint new carpet and faint smoke, all mixed together.

When I viewed the property I just figured it was because the place had been renovated (new paint and carpet) and I still assume that's what it is, however I don't seem to be able to get rid of it :(

I've tried leaving the windows open for an entire day, but then the next time I came back it was still there. When you're in the place it's not that strong smell of paint that is unbearable, it's more of a faint mix of what I described above.

Oh and final thing... I left a hoodie there one night by mistake. The next day I brought it back to my old place and could clearly smell something strong on it.

It's quite dissapointing as I don't want all my new stuff (matress etc) smelling of this.

Please help OcUK!

Have you tried airing the place? Leave the windows open all day and febreeze should help

As mentioned in the original post I have already tried airing the place, the smell still remained. And I don't want to use Febreze, all that does is cover the smell, not eliminate the source

when i moved into my new place i had all the carpets cleaned before moved in and it never stunk before it was fine but after carpets were cleaned all the crap in was lifted in the air and it had that similar smell u mentioned above for about 3-5 weeks for me! i only had to put up with for a week tho then it all went!

did u have ya carpets cleaned?

They are brand new carpets. The place has been renovated

Previous owner of my previous apartment had smoked the place down and they had to renovate the whole place to get rid of it. Floors, walls, everything had to be changed and the smell was still there but very faint.

I guess it's just because of the renovating and the smoke smell will just stay there :(

Awesome trollin' session you got going on this evening

ta m8, just saw a few supposed remedies to your problem with a quick google search, maybe see what you find there. a few of them look like old housewifes tales though

You can borrow my Labrador if you like, one fart from him and those faint smells will be the last of your worries forever. :D

It just needs airing out, if possible leave windows open as much as you can and if you can get to ikea buy some of their scented candles in a glass and use them, like £1 each or something.

The most promising one I found was using onions. Apparently you chop up a load and put them in a bowl of water, leave them in the room/s and they should in theory absorb the smell.

Not sure though as it sounds a bit odd

I plan on leaving every single window open for an entire week. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what will.

Candles, Febreze and anything else like that will just mask a smell, not remove it

carbon shards are the best thing for absorbing smells, you could buy (maybe hire) an air purifyer that contains carbon (as opposed to cloth filter)
