I watched Almost Famous (great soundtrack) a couple of nights ago and it reminded me of an album I used to enjoy when I was younger! (OK I'm not that old...) My dad got me in to his classic rock collection and I used to enjoy The Who, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc a lot.

Anyway, the film reminded me of The Who - Tommy. I love the way it tells a story and the way everything seamlessly fits together.

I'm listening to it now and I don't skip any tracks, as I might do with the rest of my music collection. It's just fantastic to listen to all the way through.

Sadly I can't think of any other albums where I can do this at the moment... Am I just impatient or do people not produce albums like this anymore?

Would appreciate some suggestions of really epic, masterpiece albums that must be listened to as a whole. Not necessarily modern either, just good.

GO!

Oh, and reasons why too:) Don't just throw some names in:)

This thread won't turn into an 'epic album' thread but 'albums which people like'. That's always the way it goes.

Anyway, to actually address the topic title, the first one that comes into my head is

Probably the best concept album I know. The story is a semi-autobiographical one about a child who runs away from home to become a rock star but realises gradually that all he ever wanted was the acceptance of his parents. Since he never gets this, he ends up committing suicide since they were never proud and their last words to him when he tries to reconcile are "we have no son".

The music in the album is brilliantly written, with various lyrics, themes and melodies recurring in places throughout until the last track which features parts of all the songs before building into an emotional climax. Fantastic album and one of my all-time favorites.

Epic Album which fits together so perfectly - Listening from start to finish, it's pure brilliance :D

If your a Zep fan then definitely be checking out Robert Plants Dreamland album form 2002 and also his new "band of joy" stuff.

Dreamland is amazing though, its him back at his best. I always remember thinking how bad his voice sounded on the Page and Plant stuff but the fact was that he was singing the wrong stuff for him, This on the other hand is right back to his roots and its very very good. "win my train fare home" would have sat well in any Zep set as well.
