Looking to rent a place as close to the city centre as possible and working on a budget just really wanting some guidance on what areas to avoid and maybe which areas you've got any experience with...

Keep finding places but my housemate seems to not like any area at all =/ Is New Gorbals all that bad? Looks ok to me...

:o

Would be easier to advise if you put up your budget. Dennistoun is reasonably priced and close to the centre as is the New Gorbals.

Has a bad reputation from years gone by and there's a big Irish/Celtic boozer nearby that can get a bit mad on a weekend, there's probably been murders around the area over the years as well.

You could say the same about everywhere surrounding the city centre I reckon, the houses look great and you're 5 mins from the city centre. I wouldn't have a problem living there!

I'd prefer it to a lot of places in the direction of the East End so probably not too bad an area.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem for £600 - a quick search shows a nice enough looking two bed on Meadowpark Street in Dennistoun for £500. Gorbals I'd imagine would be fine at that price as well. If you look in the East End personally I wouldn't cross over Cumbernauld Road.

I wouldnt go any further East than High St/Saltmarket as you get into Bridgeton territory from there which aint great.

Between Duke Street and Alexandra Parade is fine - know plenty people who have lived in that area and get nice flats without any hassle. I live just over High Street and can't say I've ever had any hassle at all.

The main problem I'm having is that I keep finding quite a few nice places for a good price, nice inside, good amenities but housemate has talked down almost everything I've found because he doesn't like the area, and this is from someone who has lived in Scotland for about a year.

90% of the places in the price range are new gorbals, but that's a no go apparently. And keep the suggestions coming, very helpful thanks.

Sounds like a pretty crap situation to be honest. With your budget he needs to be a bit more flexible. Also has he actually ever lived in any of the areas that he's rejecting - most of the preconceived ideas about Glasgow are a load of rubbish.

Don't write off Parkhead. Lived there for 3 years and it's not the prettiest place (although undergoing tons of redevelopment for the 2014 commonwealth games), rents are cheap and it's all of 15mins bus trip into the city centre. Like everywhere there's good and bad parts but near the stadium and london road is absolutely fine.

Does it have to be in the centre or close to it? Lots of nice places surrounding Glasgow reachable by rail link.

He's not lived in any of the areas, and yea, reminds me of all the "you're going to get stabbed" type comments I got before I moved up.

Maybe we'll find a really nice place closer to the centre of the city, would be nice, but they're not coming up that often and we need to move out asap.

Well, if there was a really nice place further out for quite cheap then maybe, but at the price range it's 6 and 2 3's when you take into account commuting costs.
