Sunday night Atlantic storm

It is starting to pick up here in the North east of scotland, wind is starting to get strong, and thats the rain just on aswell

The area of low pressure is quite deep (959mB) its been a while since we've had a proper 'storm'...60mph gusts aren't much tbh. I get concerned when 70-80mph+ gets mentioned on forecasts. You can have hurricance force winds but the system that produces them isn't always a hurricane

These types of depression are common in autumn/winter anyway - usually we get a lot of these in October (on average the windiest month) but this year its been quiet...

In Scotland this depression is normal, but here in the south east of England its usually blown out of proportion...to me it'll just be wet & windy...I slept through the Great Storm of 1987 (not a hurricane, as we do not get them in this part of the world) and was evacuated from school during the Burns Day Storm of Jan 1990.

The system is slowing slightly, which is bad, as if the LP centre is over water it won't fill in (Pressure rise) and wind and rain will remain, whereas if it moves over land it will die. Hence the reason when hurricanes reach US land from the GOM they collapse.

The strongest winds are in the SW quadrant of the outer bands of the system, currently SW of ROI. Depending on the track of the system, if this area hits the SW there could be some very nasty gusts.

Also, this system is officially a "bomb" now, with excess of 24millibar pressure falls within the last 12hrs (24mb in 24hrs classified as a bomb)

Not much chance of a sting jet on this system as jetstream winds are not high enough (1987 storm was a sting jet)

If your sting jet drops a bomb can it land on my workplace so I don't have to go in tomorrow.

My letterbox has started chattering. Time to batten down the hatches!

Why am I imagining, a major storm going on, with roofs wide open. And the guys posting on here are sat with anoraks, screaming as they type. :D

"And YES, I can now see the sky through what's left of my roof. Im using an umbrella to shelter the computer, but im not sure how much longer I can hold on-.........waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Pressure taking a nose dive  :D

I'm glad its not at Nottingham, Hate storms :(.

Its partly due to the fact that I learned a long time ago that houses in the UK are only designed to withstand wind speed of 70mph and anything over that can cause substantial structural damage. I cant afford structural damage...

Not many houses can withstand over 70mph, ask south America.
