Makes sense actually, hospital would probably have been one of the last places evacuated, especially if it was on the edge of a town. The situation could have been going on for a month or so, with the hospital being defended (think of the bodies outside) before it was overrun only a couple of weeks before he woke up.

Do the books say it's worldwide or just confined to the US? Also why it started? (Although I guess this could be a bit of a spoiler for us that haven't read the novels).

The books never mention the origin or how widespread it is so not really a spoiler. If anything it makes the story better as you are more concerned with the characters rather than the science of 'what caused this'.

Even then, you'd think gas would take a while to run out but more likely you'd think the USA would be quarentined so most supplies would dry up in a couple days max as everyone rushes to get a full tank like they do before a strike.

Wrong type of gas I'm guessing, heating and hot water is done by natural gas generally. Most houses would be run off the main "gas line". It is hard to judge, there would be lots of reasons for it to go out, damage to the line, supplies running low etc.

Realistically, the flowers could have been replaced several times over after the ones he remembered, the beard could be trimmed, the wife banging the friend......... grr. I was just thinking the wife and friend being together I would think would be that classic friend helping with kids, talking to each other at hospital and months later being so close they kiss, see it in a million films/tv shows. However, they could have been banging before couldn't they, they could have been having an affair.

My guess is they've been having problems before that, going on the conversation in the police car, so I expect it has been going on a while.

He says the gas has been out for "maybe a month" iirc.

Yeah that is right. Although that doesn't really help much with the timeline.

Indeed, what with the army based outside, automatic gunfire inside it makes sense that the hostpital would be a key place to defend and use as a base of operations.

Anyone reading a thread about an alreadying airing tv show should expect spoilers. Do the VB forums have the code for hiding text like spoilers anyways?

Spoiler

Can someone explain what the opening scene was about (when he shot the little girl)

Really? It was a flash forward (I know people have already said this), of course this scene will be revisited.

In fact I reckon theres a fair chance it will be early in the second episode because he's still alone with the police cruiser and looking for gas.

I think it has some sort of importance that will be revealed, but judging by the two page argument over "what type of tank it was" I think we should start taking things more at face value.

Probably the most important thing about this scene was that he shot the girl, remember how many times we were told gunfire attracts extra zombies? Theres the chance hes gonna find himself in a spot of bother and then the other survivors come and save him.

I don't think it is certain that it will be revisisted. He left the Police cruiser miles back, so unless he doubles back the scene could have been bypassed. He did visit serveral places for gas, maybe they were not all shown.

PLEASE WITH THE SPOILERS!!!!

For goodness sake! It may not be a spoiler for you... But it is for me! PLEASE!!!!

How is that a spoiler. :p

Erm did you miss the rest of the episode, you know, the bit with the horde of zombies, the horse and the tank... :p

I felt sorry for the horse :( The horse could easily have barged through the few blocking his way out.

And who else would love a series/film to show the actual start of the zombie plague, seeing the panic at the hospital would have been great! I thought the best bit of the Dawn of the Dead remake was the start seeing the world falling apart. Hope they do get round to filming World War Z!

Liked it a lot.

Thought the effects were very good. However also thought it strange that Egg didn't seem too bothered about missing time etc.

We are all showing our age calling him Egg though, when was This Life on? Must be well over ten years ago! Just checked more like 14!

It's funny reding peoples ideas of what is going to happen, when you have read the book already.

Thought the first episode did a pretty good job.

Ah, to be honest I was meaning gas in the american sense, as in petrol. But I just remembered the whole showering thing and having not had a shower, being very happy there was hot water because the station has its own gas supply, I should rewatch it, is that when he said the gas supplies dried up?

Because natural gas could be turned off to prevent huge problems quickly, while individual petrol stations obviously already have gas there and I was thinking more along the lines of people lined up getting a full tank while they could.

Either way, it doesn't really help guess the time line. :p

As for spoilers, it might not seem like it, but saying they don't go into the history/spread/cause of the zombocolypse is a spoiler, just because, we who haven't read the books can now assume(unless it deviates from books) to not go into that. Again things might not seem like spoilers but you half let on where the show is likely to go. I dunno, that would be dissappointing, as someone said, while maybe not the best bit, knowing/seeing how it happened can be a huge part of a show/story like this. Seems a huge thing to skip out, but then being different is how various different stories end up being so good, by not being by the numbers.

I dunno, I think Lost and other similar tosh has made me crave detail and assume its being held back rather than not there, which just makes you want to know ever last thing. God damned Abrams and other similar idiots with their nonsensical rubbish shows.

I like that, he's just getting on with it, he has a goal, he's going to do it, everything else doesn't matter. But its so hard to relate to in our 24/7 news, constant barage of info type society, not knowing how something that big happened is madening :p

Apart from the fact he's already left the police car (due to lack of fuel I would imagine) and travelled into town on the horse.

Also he's already in a spot of bother and stuck in a tank surrounded by 100s of Zombies. They've even set up him being rescued by other survivors at the end of the episode with the radio communication.

Like I said I just don't feel it needed the flash forward at the very start of the first episode. I'd imagine 99.9% of people watching it were doing so because its a zombie tv show (its been well advertised after all), and I highly doubt that if they removed the flash forward anyone would have confused it with a regular cop drama and switched off. In my opinion the flash forward was used because everyones doing it so its awesome right, not becuase it was required or relivant.

Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the episode and will be watching the whole series, but if this is going to be anything more than just another Zombie program/movie its not going to be because omg he shot a zombie kid. Its going to be because of the character development and the scene with the two cops in the car talking about life and love did a lot more for this aspect of the story than omg he shot a zombie kid.

Have to agree with DM on the spoilers. For those that have no read the books, there is a huge potential for spoilers from those that have
