We have a Sony Bravia 32" that has an ethernet port. It also supports wireless, but that requires an additional dongle that I don't have, might consider getting it.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with these things? I've followed the instructions, and as far as I can tell it connects to the network just fine, claims it has an internet connection and an active LAN connection but when I try to browse anything (eg I want to play some music off my server) nothing happens.

some of these things are only designed to play specific content.

Not all of them are DLNA devices. some just have like an internet channel to let you watch youtube stuff etc..

What model have you got ?

have you allowed your server to let your telly see your files, you may need something like twonky, or even download the free samsung media server to get it running.

Like mrlol says, some of the tvs that have LAN are for iplayer, you tube etc, not for streaming things through a network.
Check the details on the manufacturers website, it will say if it has DLNA.

Yep I've been looking around and its DLNA stuff.

I've installed PS3 media player on my home server and it works fine now :).

I'm watching this thread with interest, I too have a Sony TV with a LAN connection, it's all setup but won’t actually show any photos/music/videos in the menu even when it locates my home server.

Thanks for the advice with PS3 media player, I'm giving it a go now.

Yep sounds like the exact problem I had. PS3 works well out of the box, but I've had trouble getting it to play FLAC files (which it apparently does), so I'm just reading around/posting on the forum for advice.

I used this guide for setting up if its any help.

so your problem is that you didnt have a DLNA serving application.

what were you attempting to use to share the media before ? just windows file sharing ?

Hmm well I've given Tversity a try, and can't get it working. Despite the fact it says its a DLNA server, my TV refuses to connect to it saying invalid server type.

Tried Twonky, and well it doesn't appear to have FLAC support, and I think for transcoding movies you need to buy it..

So I can't decide whether or not to buy software like this (Mezzmo seems likeliest at present), or get something like WDTV which is admittedly more expensive but probably an awful lot better.

Scrap that, Mezzmo looks awesome. Great suggestion - worked straight away!
