Afternoon all,

I have had a call this afternoon from an old work collegue who is selling his car and knows I am on the look out for a 2nd car for my commute.

'03 1.9tdi Audi A4 Sport (July '03)
FSH
Dual Zone Climate Control etc etc
58k on clock

2 owners from new, he has owned it for the past 5 years and looked after it very well.

He is asking £6k for it, is this a good deal? Was thinking of offering him £5.5k.

What are the book figures on these out of interest?

Cheers

Why would you want this car? It's ruined by the dreadful engine that belongs in a Golf hatchback. To be fair that shape of A4 never had a suitable diesel engine fitted - even the 2.5 TDI was frankly rubbish.

I have asked the question, how much does it cost usually for the work to be carried out?

I have a mate who part owns a VAG garage which would hopefully do the work for a bit cheaper if reqired.

Well originally looking at 330i however since owing a house and my milage varying anywhere from 9k - 20k I am looking into cheaper on fuel cars.

Currently me and the gf drive a 1.9 Grande Punto Sporting, I am sure the Audi will be a step up in the comfort side of things at least compared to the Punto.

As I said, he just rang out the blue to see if I fancied it as he heard I was looking into buying a 2nd car.

Just dont get this sort of mentalility really.

Lets... save money with a cheap and economical car....

....then spend it all again because the 'cheap' car is infact a 7+ year old prestige car

Can't see parts and running costs been that expensive? Especially with a friend running a VAG specialist garage.

When looking at 3 series of around the same age, surely these would be much more expensive & have much more risk of big bills at this age?

An '03 1.9tdi Audi A4 is a prestigious car?

It is a 'prestige car', yes. It is an Audi. I cannot be bothered to have this argument with you, it isn't relevent at all to the discussion.

The fact its now £5k doesnt stop it being a 'prestige car', just like the fact that you often find 6 year old BMW 325i's being parked beside bins stinking of illegal drugs doesnt stop them being prestige cars either ;)

Yes, and? Your only two choices are A4 or 330i?

Incidentally if you can handle the clatter at idle, that engine is perfectly fine imo. My brother-in-law has it in an A3 and it still feels refined and quiet once on the move. Ludicrously frugal also.

Unless your mate is going to steal parts for you and work for £0 an hour then of course its going to cost more than a more conventional car.

Do you want to save money? Buy a cheap and economical Ford or something.

Are you not bothered about saving money? Buy a nice Audi A4.

Simples :)

Hahaha! I wasn't questioning you for an argument, I was just hinting that a 1.9Tdi A4 isn't spec'd well enough or built well enough to be classed as "prestigious" in my book.

Also, was there a need for the low blow pop at my sexy black b*tch?! ;)

Really? My friend has that exact model and I wouldn't say it was better built than my E46. It feels slightly comfier inside but that's it, everything is plastic and just feels shoddy.

Always thought people went on about the build and interior quality of these A4's. Wouldn't say it's any less prestigious than a 320d SE or whatever Merc offer.

Wasn't looking at is as a prestigious car, used to driving a 1.9 punto so engine not an issue. Just like the look of the car, been well cared for, and like I say it was a bit out the blue that he rang.

Must admit, I remember sitting in the car once and it is one of the comfiest cars I have been in...
