Value of a car I have been offered - A4

If you like it for those reasons and you know its a looked after cared for example then get it bought. All everyone is saying is that there are other cars with the same/similar engine that will do the same job cheaper and the Audi brand with that particular engine doesnt make much sense to some, personally I think it should have a wafty 6 cylinder engine or a 1.8 Turbo engine and four wheel drive like I used to have and even that felt a bit underpowered for the size of the car

with an a4, expect front suspension bushes etc to cost a bomb when they need to be renewed, they do have complicated suspension

clutch change will be dear too

other than that, i cant see them being too savage to run and the old PD lumps are brilliant (in terms of 4 cyl diesels) in that they never break, very simple to live with, albeit hardly the final word in refinement... but then it is a diesel, what do you expect?

FWIW, I paid £260 to have the timing belt and waterpump fitted on my A3 before i sold it, that was at an indi VAG specialist.

thats on a transverse engine, not longitudinal, so the cost may vary a little

with the front end of the bay off theyre pretty nice to work on.

£6k is too much. £4.5/5K sounds reasonable. But the engine like Fox says, sucks.

Not really. As Matt82 said, the PD engines are excellent at what they do.
They're about as refined as a tractor, but they are reliable, powerful (relatively) and frugal.
No vibrations through the gear lever either ;)

Decided not to go for it, hasn't got cruise and a few other things I would have liked, similar money would get me a slightly higher miilage with a few more toys & leather.

Girlfriend didnt like the colour anyway (dark blue).

£300 to get service, belt & water pump done which I thought was very reasonable.

Really have no idea what car we are wanting!

Have to say I agree somewhat that you appear a little confused and trying to ride two horses at one time. I think you have to decide what your true objective is. Is it leather and in-car toys or is it economy leaving money for non-car toys?

Once you've decided what you are trying to achieve finding a suitable car will be easier.

im tempted to get one back in my life. for peanuts you wont be expecting 7 series refinement and they go and go and go

I did some investigating last night and found out that anything with 110bhp or more that isn't a shed or will cost no less than €4000.

The plan would be to replace the stupidly thirsty Volvo, but I doubt it's worth spending that much on a slow diesel.
I might as well just keep ****ing money away on petrol and have something quiet and comfortable.

If I could get one closer to the value of the Lolvo (~€2500) then I'd just do a swap.

If we're going with cliches in this thread then the OP could have his cake and eat it by going down the mondeo route tbh. A tidy, facelift Ghia X with full history <100k miles could be had for half the cost of the A4.

Ignore the haters and the negativity, its a good car and looks superb. Best looking saloon around that age. Would make a great distance commuter car.

The PD although not the most refined is economical and pretty reliable for a diesel which is something you'll need to consider as presumably, you'll be taking it to 100k+. Smokes a bit on acceleration though even newer ones. Only thing I don't like about that A4 is that the ride is knobbly in standard spec and even more so in Sport guise.

I had a look at these recently and they were about £3.5k for a decentish, but high mileage 2002 petrol car. So for a slightly newer '03 Sport PD130 (which command higher used prices), you'd probably be looking at around £5-5.5k depending on condition.

The equivalent E46 diesel is a better car in almost every way though.
