What you going to buy instead? If its another 500 quid motor i would just pay to repair that one. Better the devil you know.

Agreed. Whilst there would be no point throwing good money after bad, weight up the cost of the repair vs the purchase price (and more potential failures) of a replacement.

If you are happy with the car, repair it.

Not the same model so unsure of the differences, but i got a 'Supply and fit new clutch kit & release bearing' for £260 (£80 kit, £140 labour and some VAT) from a local VAG specialist for an '03 plate Polo SDi if that gives you an idea on price? Have you tried haggling him down a bit?

I forgot to mention, the £339 he quoted to fix it probably doesn't even include the VAT.

If you've got 2 or 3 grand lieing around for a new car why is this even an issue ?

Are you just kidding yourself you need a new car when you dont ?

If you want one, Fine, who are we to stop you. Dont kid yourself that you need to however.

Yeah, I've pleaded poverty by telling him I thought that sounded a bit steep. That's when he asked what I was considering doing with it, when I said I was thinking of scrapping it, he then asked what engine it had in it and queried if I wanted to offload it to him.

woah hold on now. He quoted you on a clutch without even knowing what engine was in it?

Just a quick google gets you a 1.4 clutch kit for around £90-100. He may be quoting you for an OEM kit though. I'd shop around, go through the yellow pages to look for VW specialist in the area and get some more quotes.
